I was wondering if the Valve Gear/Main Rod components on a Tyco Chattanooga 0-8-0 would fit on the Tyco / Mantua Die Cast Mikados??? I have an early red box Tyco Mikado I am going to heavily customize and repaint after stripping. The Valve gear and such that it has now is less than perfect. Every now and then I see some nice Chattanooga engines WITHOUT the tenders (that's where the engine is), so I might be able to get that cheaply.
I was fortunate to pick up 2 of the Precision Scale All Weather Die Cast cabs and a nice cast snow plow to replace the stock plastic pilot. I'm still waiting on some cast details to come in but when this project is all done it's going to be a very nice and unique engine.

I know what you meen. I have 2 of the Chattanooga's. I like them because they are nicely detailed and well preportioned. One of them I modified into a Consolidation, installing a motor in the boiler (after removing the smoke unit) and swapping out the tender for a tank type tender from a kit. This attempt did not work so well due to using a cheap hobby motor and not doing such a good job on installing the drive gear on the axle. I picked up another Chatt. from Ebay and plan on converting it into a Consol. also, but this time using motor and gear sets from NWSL. Keep those Tyco's rollin'.

Having just finished building a Mantua Mikado, http://2guyzandsumtrains.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=816.html and remotoring a Chattanooga 2-8-0, http://2guyzandsumtrains.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=558.html I would say it can be done but will involve some modification. The cylinder block will need drilled to accept the cross head guides, the valve gear hanger will need modified to fit the Mike frame, the valve rod and eccentric cranks from the Mike will need to be used. I would like to find a few of the cross head and valve gear conversion kits that were sold by a company called Mellor. I have built a Mikado using an extended Chattanooga 2-8-0 chassis with a NWSL gearbox and an AHM Pacific boiler. You could extend the rear of the 0-8-0 frame and mount the Mantua Mikado boiler on it. but this would require fabricating a new drive.Ray

I'm very familiar with YardBird, it's probably just best to fork over the money to them. That happens to be where I got some of the cast parts for the mikado. It looks like he is going to be selling the Helix Humper engine replacements for the old mantuas also. I hear the engines run fabulous with these.
It sounds like way too much work to try and use what's on the chattanoogas. I was hoping they were the same parts but apparently it's much different. Sometimes you can pick up a chattanooga without tender and a smacked up cab for a couple of a dollars.
