My wife is a little iffy BUT....she's a train nut and made me promise it wouldn't be expensive. I'm going to get ahold of a lot of wood and make a facade for the back third of the building to make it look like a caboose. Since her dad and grandfather worked for Chessie/CSX, if I paint it with Chessie System colors I'm pretty sure she won't be upset.
Here's how the kitbash will work: the house is 24' x 60'. I'm going to remove the windows in the back third of the house - so about the back 20'. This is actually only removing 4 windows, and I'll insulate them, put in extra studs and drywall over them.
There are wooden pallets EVERYWHERE I can and do pick up. Remove all nails, and leave room for "rivets." Plane boards down nicely with planer in back yard, and resulting sawdust goes into the compost pile.
Remove siding from the house, and install exterior studs for mounting the facade. Exterior studs are made the same way as above, so basically all the wood is free. Get mistint paint at Lowe's. Mix up a couple five gallon buckets in "close" colors, then have them re-tint, which they do for free.
Pre-paint the boards with the Chessie System colors, number boards. Install boards. Finish painting on road numbers, etc. Start dealing with people asking about the house.
Install skylights in roof, cleverly disguised as observation cupola on top of caboose. I might put on a false roof, VERY slightly sloped, and figure out how to hide the gutters, too.
Now if I can just get someone to donate me a real locomotive shell, I could replace the garage....
