I found an example of the subject loco in the back of a cupboard. It seems in good condition, but when I test ran it, before & after stripping it down & oilng it, the running was somewhat erratic & also cyclic grinding noisey. (The grinding noise is once per revolution)
It has the 'open frame'/ slot car motor.
I was wondering if anyone had repowered one of these as the valve action is great to watch. I would like to get it running smoother. I did notice that the brass axle 'bearings' for the center gear driven axle were loose in their channel, whereas the other 2 axles were firm. Not sure if that is relevant.

Sounds like it could use a new set of axle bearings.

Yardbird also has several romotoring solutions, and there's always Helix Humper.

I take it from your comment that the bearings should not move?? The middle one 'rocks' with the axle rotation, about 1 mm. How are they held 'firm' in the diecast chassis? Tanked

Are you saying that the axle is loose in the brass bearing, or that the bearing is loose in the frame? If it's the latter, you could shim them with something, or even tack them in place with CA. No, they shouldn't move, and since the middle axle is the geared one, it's the most likely to wear. I would invest in a new set, and shim the center set if necessary.
