i just bought a few older athearn sd9 engine & one of the powered engines has the older type motor in it. i'm thinking of changing it to a newer motor. i seen a motor from a P2K sd9 & it looks like their the same. can anyone confirm this?

The only thing I don't like about the P2K motors is that the diameter of the shaft is smaller and if you accidentally bump or drop it the weight of the flywheel will bend the shaft and throw the flywheel out of balance. Be gentle with them.

Ray, do the P2K motors have a 2mm shaft? They're usually plenty strong enough if it's hardened steel, but I'll be careful when I take any P2k's apart. Never knew that.

well i just thought i would answer this. i did get two proto 2000 motors, & they dropped right in place of the thearn motors. the difference was in the drive shafts, but they came with the motors, so i was ok. i can't tell any difference on the way they run between the proto & the athearn motor.

The Proto motors are built to tighter tolerances, e.g. machined brass brush holders, less end play, etc. The Athearn gold motors have big problem with brush chirp, which I believe is due to their sloppy fit inside the brush holders.
