well i started on a bachmann plus SD45 a couple days ago. it was a factory Santa Fe paint job, so i had to strip the shell in brake fluid. there has got to be an easier way! i cut off the low hood & added a cannon & co high short hood kit. i had to fill about one scale foot on each side where the bachmann steps didn't line up at all. it will be getting a set of micro scale Norfolk Southern horsehead decals. i have one other bachmann spectrum Santa Fe SD45 that I'm going to do in the southern tux. I'll post a few pictures when I'm done.
I've noticed here & on other web sites that there isn't many people (if any) that talk about their bachmann engines. well after i seen how fare off the steps were to the cannon high hood, i understand why. they make a nice out of the box product, but their nowhere near as easy to modify as a athearn or kato. the three bachmann engines i have do run top notch though.
i also stripped an atlas SD24 2504 southern unit. that was some thick paint. i don't see how any detail could be seen through it. it was almost as thick as what a real car would have, & almost as hard. would bead blasting the rest of the paint off hurt the shell?

My brother strips the paint off all his diesel shells by bead blasting. Some things to keep in mind. Use low pressure, about 30 psi. Typical automotive glass bead media is too big to blast away paint in cracks and crevices. You will have to pick that out with dental instruments. Or you might be able to use a smaller media, such as baking soda. Thats just a guess. I've never done it that way. Somethings I have noticed: the older shells, especially TYCO will erode away under bead blasting leaving a bad surface. With the Athearn, Atlas, IHC, Bachmann shells this has not been a problem. I think you've seen my pictures under the NS SD35 project discussion. Those shells were bead blasted.

Hey guys,
Is it safe to assume that your talking about diecast metal bodies?
I can't see bead blasting plastic. Wouldn't it melt?
I use Easy Off oven cleaner to strip paint off of my plastic bodies. Smelly, but works

Oh, OK I've heard about soda blasters, never seen one in action before, though.
Bet it would clean all the crap right off of the shell, right down to bare plastic.
That I would like to see
Cheers, Ian
