Is that a repaint Mike? I only ask because those decals look nice and sharp.

I think that's actually one of the IHC re-releases of the former Tyco Wide-Vision; the chassis mounting lugs give it away as such. The COTS stencils look like others I've seen on the IHC versions.
Just for fun you should compare it WV cabs from other manufacturers... Tyco's is like 11/10 (or would that be 1/80?) scale in comparison. Might be why it had such a short life in Tyco's hands.

Well here's my contribution this week: a newly-aquired enigma. First, some backstory.
Most of you may well be familiar with Life-Like's Tootsie Roll boxcars, which have been made for years, right up through Walthers' takeover of the LL name. If you aren't, here are some pics courtesy of BriansTyco in This post
/tyco/forum/uploaded/GoingInCirclez/TR.jpg
/tyco/forum/uploaded/GoingInCirclez/LL.jpg
The 40' car was the first version. Sometime in the 80's, it was replaced with Life-Like's 50' Evans high cube as shown in the second picture... and survived through LL's last packaging scheme as shown.
A few weeks ago a new member Phuzee inquired about a Tootsie Roll car, giving only a description but assuming it was Tyco. I politely intervened and suggested he had not Tyco, but Life-Like. And nobody offered counter evidence...
until this turned up recently. I had NEVER seen it before...!

That is none other than the same Pemco-sourced Mehano-made modernized 50' plug door that Tyco used in their last train sets!
Now how did this come to be?! It is a 100% factory paint job, so it is legit. But consider: it has the early, open stirrups - which were later filled even as Tyco continued using this tooling. Mehano / Model Power / IHC did not end up with this tooling until much later than that. And while Life-Like used outsourced tooling in their early years... by the 1980's, when this car was introduced, Life-Like was using their own unique (or acquired) tooling exclusively - in other words they NEVER offered this particular 50' reefer car (to my knowledge).
So again, how did this come to be? The graphics are the same as Life-Like's, right down to the road number.
- Did Tootsie Roll Industries devise this scheme, and offer the license up for bids?
- Did Life-Like consider using this tooling for a while?
- Were the Life-Like 50' Evans, and the Mehano/Pemco/Tyco 50' reefer both made in the same plant, and somehow get mixed up?
- When Tyco started using this tooling, they were pretty much out of the billboard car craze. Yet Model Power (the other contemporary user) was not known for this then...
- And could it be, the awful, botched color registration over the deep door details was this car's ultimate undoing, provoking the switch to the LL 50' Evans boxcar? Could be... but if so, who made that call?
So again: who, when, and why was this car made? It's an enigma for sure! And my apologies to Phuzee... if his is the same as this, I'd love to know.

I was gonna start the next COtW thread, but I'll just tag this one along! This was the hopper that I forgot to put into the picture from the collection I picked up off my friend (see my post in this thread http://www.tycoforums.com/tyco/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=7224#21458). Dunno what kit he built it from I didn't look it up yet. But it's sharp looking! /tyco/forum/uploaded/ChrisC/trains359.jpg
