The body is a bronz streamlined economy hudson loco body. I first tried a old brass mountain frame. I tried it as a mountain and ti didn't work out. I removed a driver and tried it as a pacific or hudson. The brass frame just didn't work out. I went to the Mantua Pacific frame and drive and had some sucess here. I have a frame in the body and I tried different tenders with it. The two that seam the best was the Riverrossi NYC Henrey Driffus streamlined tender and a old A.C. Gilbert diecast hudson tender. I am going with the gilbert. On the mantus drive I replaced the mantua lead and trailing trucks with brass ones. This is where I am now.

The streamlined Hudson was the cheapest one from Varneys Big engines. but now iI think it is one of the rarest. Nice work toptrain! - Erich

And the work goes on !!! Answers first. Yes it is heavy, and I'll try not to drop it on my foot. I will be making a skirt for each side. I think they will be identical. Varney's add photo shows it painted for the New York Centrals, " Empire State Express ", Streamline Hudson. This NYC streamliner was the last they made. It had the corrugated lower sides who's corrugated style also continued onto the lower tender sides. i It then continued on, matching the lower corrugation on all the passenger cars. NYC also had the Henry Dreyfuss- styled Streamlined Hudson, 'The Century', that had the same boiler lines but a Mohawk fin applied to the curved smoke box front. It was smoth sided and and no corrugation applied to it. These were used to pull the 20th Century Limited. There is a third NYC streamlined Hudson, the" Mercury ". The Commodore Vanderbilt" was the forth. The skirting Varney uses almost matches the New York Centrals Commodore Vanderbilt. The rest of the streamlining does not. The body also is a very good match for the Santa Fe Blue Goose, another Hudson. It is much more alike to this Hudson then any of the New York Centrals streamlined Hudson's. The side skirt Varney show, is of the type used on the Blue goose. The New York Centrals Century and Empire is different. All three have the same bulging, round, bullet shape boiler front, with the same streamlined front pilot. The fire box is also of the Blue Goose style. NYC used their Hudson which had its own very unique styled firebox. The forward line of the firebox was not as long forward from the cab as Varney's and had a arcing curved line starting at the top curving forward. Now I am not a modler of either line, either the NYC, or the ATSF. My lines are the CNJ which had no streamliners, on the Pennsylvania Rail road which streamlined its K4 Pacific's. (It isn't hard to change a drive from a Hudson to a Pacific.) Will this happen? I don't Know. The model will be a streamlined something. I will continue the work started. I'll try to match what Varney had done. And then make it a Pennsy loco. frank

I also have installed a cab floor and blank boiler headplate. I have drilled out the headlight, filled in some ruff spots, and got a template for the side skirts started. frank

Mike, Chriss, Matt, Ben : Thanks for your intrest. Their is more you can't see. I'm working on a cab interior. Nothing elaberet just a boiler backhead some seats and a crew. I have a floor and wall put in. It needs some smothing out. I have to look to see if I have a boiler backhead on a old plastic steam engine boiler somewhere. I also have a wire hinged floor plate I may install on the rear of the cab. I hope to do a belpair firebox. The lower detail is there. The upper square corner is not. I would like to put a bell someplace. Got any ideas? The way the boiler top is, there is not a place for a bell or the pressure relief safety valves. Pennsy had three. I will have to cut a hole and square it out, then install a recessed plate to accept the needed parts. There is one more small cut out on the boiler top on the engineers side, I think for a whistle. frank

** SG your photo shows what i feal that I have to do. In my 8-15-09 post 2nd paragraph second half. I discribe doing just that. ** Erich. The older stuff is the same with. My other tender is a Riverrossi. It is to narrow. I have a bronze tender from a Bowser mountain. It is to small. The only tender I have that is as wide and high is the Gilbert. Striping the rivets is to much work. The chance of damageing the tenders sides is high. Untill i find a better choice, the rivets stay. frank

That's an impressive hunk of brass there, Frank. You may need to reinforce your benchwork. She'll be a puller, that's for sure.
Someone had some cast brass F-unit A-B shells at the Greenberg show. I forgot the manufacturer, but man, where they beasts. They were probably oversized even for OO.

Nelson : ** I was at the Greenbergh show in Edison NJ on sat Aug 8th. Their is the Greenbergh show in Pennsy yesterday and today. If my knee wasn't banged up I'd be their today. **At Edison I couldn't fine to much to add my trains. I did fina a Bachmann NW J, 4-8-4 with a Bowser drive installed. Also some interesting metal tank cars. A black Phillips 66 and a silver ATLAS were two of them. These were identical in size and detail to the Varney, Life Like plastic ones. I know Varney made metal cars, way back when. These two are proably theirs. I also found a Thomas ROMA wine tank car. also. **Their is the New Hope train show the first sunday in September. Their were no New Hope shows during the summer. Well have a nice sunday. ** frank

Nelson : ** To answere about the 4-8-4, It was $25. I had purchased it on saturday. It still has its factory paint and isn't to beat up. ** I seen those trollies. Their were a pair in orange. A powered and a trailler. It was early Saturday and the price was higher. The dealer wanted $60. for the pair and only 1 was powered. ** You made a nice repair to yours. ** Concering the 6 volt motor. I had a old Gilbert Hudson with a 6 volt motor which I would run on 12VDC. Their was no maganet in the motor, just a field winding. I wired in a DPDT slide switch and was able to run it. Just reversing had to be done thro the switch. I didn't use it much and when I sold it, it was still running. Gilbert made a replacement magnet for them to convert to DC. It was a big magnet and filled the hudson cab. I still have a old drive for one that I have put photos on line of it in afew places. ** I have seen the flyiers for that Clinton train show. I haven't gone yet. It is run at the Clinton dinner at exit 13 on RT 78 I think. You can see the dinner from the road. It is the one with the old CNJ blue comite observation car attached to it. The show is a outdoor show and dealers get a space and provide their own tables. frank
Nelson : 8-18-09 Those are the ones I looked at. Indiana railway. They were painted orange with black lettering. The reason that I thought of getting them was a post in big blue on rebuilding a brass gasoline rail coach. This dodlebug is similiar in appearance and size only missing the old time truck engine enclosure. like a old 1920 mack truck would have. Out side of making a truck front end all that is necessary is a relocation of the front truck foward to limite overhang on the turns. The post was by a modelsof1900. I answered the post with a comment about the car body looking like a trolley. Enjoy your new trains, and the old ones. frank

that loco even has a "smiling face" on it If you count the marker lights as the eyes the headlight as the nose then the bar that runs in front the smiling mouth I see that pattern on alot of locos Will post the front UP loco to show what I mean

Looks good Frank. If the tender is to narrow, and you have 2 shells why couldn't you cut them both in half, longways, Cutting one of them off center to the right and one off center to the left then splice the wider halves together. I need a tender for a Gilbert Hudson and may try that method.

I wasn't quite sure what to make of it without the wheels, but now that they are on it's got that beautiful streamlined look to it.
I think Erich may have asked already, but is the paint done or will it be a different colour?

Wow- I think its taking shape NICELY! Great job!
I can't remember how many times I've used nail files, razor blades, the Dremel, 600-1000 grit sandpaper, superglue (as filler!), 3M blue masking tape, and automotive primer or paints.
It will be worth it when you are done!

The Mantua works fine. It fell over is dameged and is in need of repair right now. The bronze boiler is very top heavy. Also the Tuscan paint is to light in color. Needs a repaint to a darker Tuscan. frank

Hey Frank:
By top heavy do you mean the shell itself, or that it has to sit high on the chassis and that makes it top heavy?
Thanks, Gareth

Hey Ken/Frank:
I posted a query on the Vintage list (Frank you're a member I think?) to see if anyone running a different chassis like the Varney Hudson one are seeing similar issues.

Frank, I hope it didn't hit the floor when it went over. If it's top-heavy on a Mantua frame, imagine how it would be on a plastic framed loco.
