I liked the article that the author did on the Chatanooga Choo-Choo set, however, the set I received back in 1976 (or 1977) for Christmas had two differences.
1. Caboose - My set had the Chattanooga 2nd Version Extended-Vision Cupola #327-15, the 'streamlined' version, not the wide-vision version shown (for the 1975-1976 set)
2. Tank Car - Listed on the set is a Gulf Triple Dome Tank Car (357B), however, mine came with the Exxon Triple Dome Tank Car (357C)
Other than that, my set was identical to the 1975-1976 version shown.
Was mine a variation?

The actual specific contents for TYCO sets did vary a good deal. Often, I go with what's presented in the catalog and try to mention that actual contents may and did vary.

The worst set of this version was made in 1992 as i purchased one new that year. Non smoking locomotive-ran terribly. train cars never looked so toyish as the ones in this set. I recommend anyone wanting one to purchase-purchase one made in the seventies to mid eighties=1987 or earlier for much better quality.

My Chattanooga Choo Choo set from '75 or '76 had a Santa Fe wide vision caboose. Has anyone else seen this?

I finally finished piecing together my replacement Chattanooga Choo Choo set earlier this year with the purchase of the loco at a train show. Some time ago I pieced together the caboose using parts from three other cabeese acquired from antique malls. I purchased the Old Dutch Cleanser hopper and Gulf triple dome tank off of ebay sometime in the late '90s and sometime before that I purchased the crane car and boom tender (including the thumb wheel!) from a flea market. This set was a long time coming!

My Rock Island set had similar issues. Came with a trestle set and the cars didn't match what was on the box.
