well i figured i would start a new post just to show my progress. my camera sucks, & this is my first build on any train. i haven't touched a model in 10-15 years & nothing ever this small. it is just a athearn blue box SD40-2 with a cannon & company high hood & cab put on it. the decals are micro-scale & the stripes was a pain in the a$$ to say the least. i haven't dull coted it yet, I'm not sure i want to. i think a semi-gloss might look better. my next project will be a southern SD9. did the southern RR have SD9's in the tuxedo paint? anyone have a picture or a link to one? i can't find anything on it, just Norfolk southern SD9's.

i had a godzilla on my first layout when i was a kid with my first train (tyco chattanooga choo choo). i think i was 7 or 8. guess i'll never grow up.
should i use a dullcote on the southern units, or a semi-gloss?

Southern did have SD9's in the tuxedo scheme. http://www.rr-fallenflags.org/sout/sou203.jpg
Your loco looks great. I prefer semi-gloss rather than dullcote.

i was going to buy some semi gloss today, but the local hobby shop didn't have any. i think it would look better in semi gloss too.

I try to buy from my local hobby shop when I can but, if they don't have it..... try going to a hardware store or such for semi-gloss paint.

About those decals.... I'm not sure of your experience with models. I know that with airplane models; waterslide decals are usually small, you slide them right off the backing and onto the model. With looooonnnnngg stripes it's a bit different. I think the key is too just keep floating the decal with water until you get it into place. You can float the decal around the model for quite a long time. Just keep water on it. Once it's in place, gently wick away the excess water with a tissue. Then apply Micro-Sol. (I noticed you mentioned using this in another post). Once you apply MicroSol, you cannot touch the decal (as you might have figured out) because it's like moving wet toilet paper. You might already know this, I just like to think out loud sometimes. I've attempted a couple of stripe sets. An ACL purple F7 turned out o.k. The stripes on my TYCO C430 Seaboard Coast Line look more like ocean waves than a line.

i did a lot of research on the micro-sol & micro-set. you are right. the decals get very soft. i wish the micro-sol was just a bit stronger & faster though. it took 7 1/2 hours to decal this thing. i had to apply the micro-sol so many times. but i can't complain, for my very first job it turn out nicer than anything i've ever bought in HO scale. i wish my camera was better, you can't really tell anything about it.

Great looking engine, Smokie. I am going to follow your lead and do an engine repaint myself.
Thanks,
Mike

i'm going to paint 50-75% of mine over to southern eccept my tyco's. i took my time on it & i'm very pleased with it. i have two (sd40-2 & sd9) that i'm getting ready to start on. plus two SF sd45's. three of them are going to be converted over to high hoods. i love it.
