i have a set from the 70s that has an old fashioned locomotive with the attached coal car (the car that makes them GO).

there are 10 pairs of wheels on this car - the outer two pairs keep it on the track and the inner three pairs have ridges on one side to grip the track and propel it foreward (or backward). when i try to run the train, it bumps instead of glide along the track - similar to when one of the wheels jumps off the track, but i ensure ALL wheels are indeed on the track and in line. these ridged wheels do not turn easily like the outer pairs and if i tilt the car ever so slightly i can see the ridged wheels spinning when i start the train rolling.

my question is - why is the car doing this? why does it seem something is keeping it from rolling smoothly on the track?

this is one of my dad's sets and i really want to get them up and running for the holidays!

TIA!

Hi Mydadstyco,

I had the same problem with my Chatanooga steamer, it would bump and grind like a wheel had slipped the track. I thought to myself MAN THIS THING CAN'T PULL ITSELF MUCH LESS A TRAIN. It took me the longest time to figure it out. The wheels that you say grip the track should actually have tiny rubber rings on them to help the train get traction. If you turn it upside down and look at the wheels you will see grooves that the rubber rings fit in. Some of the other guys can tell you where to get those rings.

I hope I was able to help you.

of course i just brought the train back upstairs!!! but i will check the wheels - dumb question of course, but are you talking about the SILVER or BLACK wheels? it's been YEARS since i've run (or TRIED to run) this train so forgive me if i don't remember/know all the terminology/parts.

i will check out the TYCO forum to get the exact name/part numbers and then try to locate them. i'll prolly post a message here again tomorrow.

thanks for your help!

Hi Mydadstyco,

Not a dumb question at all. It would be the black plastic wheels on the coal tender. On mine it is the 2nd set of wheels from each end. Anymore questions, Just ask, I'm sure one or more of the great people on this forum can get you the answer you are looking for.

Hey,

Love that bike! Very Nice looking ride! Hope Santa brings me one of those!

With respect to the Clementine Steamers troubles...let's look at the loco's tender first.

TYCO powered this version of steam engines with tender-drive. You basically have a PowerTorque truck power unit tucked inside the middle of the tender, as seen in the above image.

The brass wheels on the outside ends of the tender pick up electrical current from the track. They need to be clean. If they are tarnished and/or dull try a pencil eraser on them or rubbind alcohol or track cleaner or even Goo Gone to get them nice and shiny.

The inside wheels made of black plastic need to have traction tires. I'm guessing this is the bumpy ride you're getting...you might have old dried and broken up traction tires. They are made of a rubber-like material and sadly time is not kind to them. I've had brand new in box TYCO locos hit the rails and the traction tires split-crack-and drop right off the wheels. They just don't survive the years well.

Believe the tender drive should have four traction tires. Two on each side and all on those middle axles. Old dried up and dead tires can be removed with a small screwdriver or tweesers. Be careful not to nick up the plastic wheels.

Stewart Products make a Traction Tire replacement kit. It sells for like $5 and provides you with a nice supply of replacement tires that will fix that problem.

My local hobby shop, Doc's Caboose in Kansas City stocks the Stewart Prodcuts Traction Tire kit.

I noticed that Walthers now has this kit listed as coming from Calumet Tains LLC (Walthers manufacturer #192).

There are two kits:

192-515 Super Traction Tire Assortment -- TYCO Traction Tires pkg(20) HO 6.95
192-505 Super Traction Tire Assortment -- Diesel Tires HO 6.95

The Clementine should take the 192-515, which used to be the Stewart Products 683-515. They are $6.95.

If you'd like to buy a set of them, just give Doc's a call at (816)471-7114 and they can have them in the mail first of the week to you. Doc and Jen are open today (Saturday until 5pm); they are closed Mon; and open Tues-Sat 10a-5pm...open late Thursdays until 7pm.

Sorry to do such a big plug for my local hobby shop and part-time employer, but the tires are listed as out of stock with Walthers and I'm almost certain we have one set left in stock right now and you mentioned you wanted to get her up and running for Christmas.

It's the four inside black wheels that'll need new rubber traction tires put into the grooved area that touches the rail head.

Looks like from your picture that those brass colored wheels could use a bit of polishing with a pencil eraser to clean them up. The cleaner they are the better they pick up electric current and thus the better and more smoothly it'll run.

Doc's Caboose would have a bottle of smoke fluid too. It runs less than $5 and any company's fluid will work in the TYCO model. Believe there is a hole on top of the boiler just behind the smoke stack that you can put say 6 drops into it. The smoke is made by the model's headlight heating it up and it will eventually puff outta the smoke stack...but again it'll take her a couple spins around the track at least to warm up and begin smoking.

Enjoy!

aw crud!!!

i got home too late and now they're closed. (i'm in NJ) looks like i will call them tuesday to order the tires - the track is all set up anyway and the other engine (santa fe) is running, but i like the "older" look so once i fix 'ol clementine, she will be up and running with her own cars, complete with the gold mine! i have a HUGE dept 56 snow village setup around the train set so i get best of both worlds - my mom's dept 56 stuff and my dad's train(s). My kids can't WAIT for me to get everything all set up!

Will post pictures when complete!!

thanks for all your help!
