We just visited my Great Uncle and Aunt in Farnham this summer ( our first time to England) and he took us on the train to London. I must say it was very smooth and quiet. We also went on a smaller steamer route through various towns. We had to leave the weekend Thomas the tank was supposed to be there. My Uncle said it was decorated as if it was back in WW2 with sand bags and artillery for the 50th anniversary of D-day. We cane to late for that. The engineer let my son go up in the cab to see the fire in the firebox. He was so excited. All and all it was a great trip and England was a nice place to visit.

Hi, I just found the ticket stubs. It was at the Mid Hants Railway. We're looking forward to going back.

Wow, that's a looker right there. I'm usually not a fan of Euro diesels but I do like that one.

Ken, can you explain the euro practice of painting steam locomotives? As you know, that was very uncommon in the states. Yet it seems to be the norm over there - was it always that way? And how often do they need to be washed? [:D]

And what's with all the "Class" designations abroad? Is it arbitrary, or sequential, and/or uniform from one railroad to the next? I guess you huys don;t have national suppliers (such as EMD, GE and ALCO) to just name a loco and be done with it. But at least in the states, most of the loco names actually meant something (at least with ALCO/GE), which helps to understand what they are.

hi goingincirclez, not sure what you mean about euro practice of painting locos, but here in uk after the 1920 the railways were reduced to 4 big companies,LMS (maroon),western side of uk from london to scotland,LNER (apple green),eastern side of uk from london to scotland,GWR,(dark green)western side london and below,Southern (medium green) region west and below london.
steam locos were named by class or a name by the companies as to why i have not a clue bit like the titanic and its sister ships to evoc power or status to attract the public i should think, with so many makers of locos it would have been to much to expect to have one system.
hi relivingthepast, yes i forgot the mid hants,i would definatly try the bluebell railway next time you visit not that far apart, ken
