An auction win arrived at the door 2 weeks ago. I got seven of them. Some of the shells were of the Mantua Tyco, Tyco variety of course. Some of the Mantua Tyco shells had had names and some didn't. The 430 Alco said Tyco inside the shell by the back of the cab though it was a MU2 Alco and would have said Mantua Tyco on the tank. The F7/9 said Mantua and the F7/9 B shell also said Mantua. The blue SF GP20 said nothing but it would have been an MU2 version. Interesting that the Alcos I've seen all have Tyco even if they're red box if you look in the shell but the F units had Mantua and the GP20 wasn't marked with either. What are your thoughts?
Sorry I meant to put this in motive power. DOH!

I've noticed some of the variations but haven't got it all figured out. Especially the F9 shells. The transition from screw mounted MU-2 to the PT is a wild ride. I have shells with the tab mounted MU-2 in the front, some in the rear of the loco, some with screw on tanks, tab mounted tanks. Then there's the MU-3? which have more than a few vatiations. The GP-20 has similar changes as the C430 shells you mention. It might be nice to figue out the time line of all these variations.

This doesn't mean much now but the SD24 says Tyco, in the cab roof, in the newer font or logo. 'Course the SD 24 was never Mantua. It also says something else but it's so small I can't see it till I find my magnifying hood. I noticed the 630 I have has no name engraved but the Tyco GP20 has the Tyco logo like the SD24. Recap; SD24 has Tyco logo in the short hood, and made in Hong Kong 430 Alco has Tyco by cab. F9 has Mantua on early versions, B unit too. Mantua GP20s no name. Tyco GP20 has Tyco logo inside, made in Hong Kong Tyco Mantua, PT powered Alco 630, no name in shell.

Ray, What variations have you noticed in the MU3 area? I only have one of those.

There are MU-3 F9s from Austria and from Hong Kong. There are differences in the sideframes and the trucks. Some of the motor parts are different. I have one that has a different weight. The weight has a plastic shell that fits into a slot on each side of the shell. (not the usual slots above the fuel tank) Austrian

Hong Kong

Ray, Thanks. There's another variation to collect. That should help keep things interesting in a Tyco sense. Did those motors only show up in F9s? Are the motor and mount systems interchangeable?

I have found these motors in tha MDT switcher. I don't know if the trolley used them at some point though. It seems that the F9 shell would fit on the Austrian drive or the Hong Kong drive.
