Nice link Erich, and it led to some beautiful old ads as well:

Sorry that they're so big! At least then you can read them easily.

you can print on thin paper - onion skin typing paper is one that comes to mind as we bought a box of it for making our own wedding invites back in the day - and then sort of white wash it onto the buildings.
Need a Coca-cola sign on the side of your building - no problem. Print, seal, then wash onto the side of your building.
GIC could probably explain the steps better than I as he's done the process directly, but there are very easy DIY ways via the internet (google images) and period company logos to make your own sinange for your layout.
FYI, on most inkjet printers the black ink is water resistant - meaning, let it dry and if you go back it's not going to wash out. Color inks are trickier, of course. You want inks that are pigment based (rather than dyes). 5+ years ago when I had to do the research for this at work Espon was the company that had the most of this on the market, due to the nature of their printer heads. Pigment based inkjets are thicker and more difficult to flow through the ink heads.
Oh and for "water proof paper" and labels, well, they kinda of work, but the ink matters more than the paper.
Sorry to ramble, i just thought that info might be handy for those who'd want to print their own stuff.

These signs aren't a do-it-yourself, and they aren't cheap, but I saw these at my local train club and they really are eye catching.

OK, I asked GIC more about it as I am more knowledgeable on the printing technology for labels and whatnot in a potential water situation (think labels on home/cottage industry produced goods you would see in an open air market (ie farmers markets)).
He says you really can't seal them since onion skin paper would be very thin and wouldn't handle much abuse.
But, you could print on thin paper. Let the ink cure (dry very very well).
Moisten the side of the building you'd like to place your sign (I guess really thinned glue again, I'm not the modeler in the house - just the coach and idea assistant) and then press it onto the side of the building. Gently work it into the material, carefully not run the ink or rip the paper. It'll slow work into the texture of your building. Brush over with an india ink wash (these would probably be done in stages). Let dry well then weather away.
I would gather you could seal it like decals after you are done, but I'm not sure it would matter.
The trick is not saturating your inks on the paper and causing them to run, unless that's an affect you'd like to have.
I have lids of canning jars in my office that have been through the dishwasher several times. The writing was printed with regular black ink onto regular labels. The color came off, but the black is still there.
