So my buddy just picked up a box of someones old railroad stuff that they didn't want anymore. Picked up some older Athern locos, and I'm pretty sure I saw a few Tyco boxcars in there! I'll have a few pictures once we get some time on Monday to sit down with it and go over it all. Among the things in the box were 2 Marklin steamers and lots of rolling stock. So I'm looking for a some help on a few things since these are totally new to us.
1. I know the two units are AC. We even got track for them, but right this second we have nowhere on the layout to mount a track for them. I've heard you can convert them to DC, just curious whats all involved in that?
2. My friend reports alot of the loop couplers for the Marklin rolling stock are either broken or just gone. Is there a kaydee style conversion or anything?
If anyone wants to tell me just leave the Marklin stuff be that's fine also But I'd much rather run them then have them sit on a shelf!

I really don't think it's feasible to try to convert them to 2 rail DC power. The wheels are not insulated from each other and will short out the power if used on 2 rail. I'd reccomend trying to fit it in somewhere as is,OR just send them to me ,as I will be building a layout soon, and will be including Marklin trains along with other gauges.

| Ok I didn't know some of the loco's had solid metal wheel sets. We had a thought, the small track up on the corner of the layout is extremely tight little mountain loop. However one of the engines is a 0-6-0 and might fit there. We were talking of maybe making that track AC so we at least had a place to test them. I'll get a better look at them tomorrow and post some pictures. Any other help would be appreciated!

Remember that Marklin HO uses a stud three rail track. They won't run on 2 rail. Also you need to use a Marklin transformer to run them. The Marklin AC system uses a 20 volt pulse to trigger the reverse unit.

| Ok that clears things up about their rail system. I was trying to read up on them and got the impression the 3 rail wasn't for all of them. My friend did mention they came with the stud 3 rail track. If there is enough I think we can just pull the track up on the mountain line and lay that down instead. Assuming we can get the track to match up with the existing room we have to make the turns up there. We do have a AC transformer for them it came with the trains. Thanks again Carl for all your help I appreciate it!

The older Marklin runs both: AC and DC, but for the reverse unit you need AC as you told.

Alright got to poke around the new engines today!
If anyone knows anything about these two fire away. I didn't see anywhere on them about running AC & DC. So all I did was stage a few shots on the main layout. Shame we can't run them right now the detail & general look of these locomotives is awesome. Some of the rolling stock they came with.

The passenger car & car carrier in the 2nd photo are awesome, but like all the cars they have full metal wheels so all I can do is pose them for now. The AC transformer they came with is acting up, we might have to take it apart and see whats up with it. We also don't currently have enough Marklin track to complete even a small circle, so we are going to have to look into getting more.

Yea they are probably going to stay AC. I was sorta hoping these were the models that would be able to do both. But we'll deal with it. Two things holding us back is lack of track & whatever the issue is with the transformer. I really like the engines they both look great and seem heavy enough that they would both pull very well. I dunno where we will go from here with them. We need to find a good space on the layout to put their track down if we wanna keep them out. If we figure out where to put them John I'll let you know about the track. Thanks everyone for your help

I remember, I got a Marklin HO steamer once for 20 at a flea market, but I never got around to buying any other equipment. Also, my mom got it caught on laundry on my ledge and flung it down a staircase...

ok a EU loco with a US Caboose on the end is just silly! German Rails used a freight car with a cupola on the end & lots of the freight cars had that on it so it wasn't uncommon to see multiple freight cars on a train with them cupolas on them
