Well, I just finished weathering this Mehano RS-2 a bit more. Keep in mind that it was mostly like this when I bought it.

I concentrated on the trucks and exhaust stack.

Hope you like it.

I believe the F unit is an F9 and was sold by Tyco near the end of their train business. Going in Circlez calls it a true F9 in one of his posts. I had one and gave it away before realizing what I had. The caboose is Tyco but might say somehting else on the bottom when it was produced but sold by Tyco. Both I think came in a set.
The RS2 weathering job is very good modeling work.

I'm sure someone out there knows the details but I think I'm correct about them being Tyco but subcontracted to RSO, Mehano, etc to fill sets.

Thanks everyone.

My next idea is to add a headlight, or in this case a heavily frosted piece of clear plastic.

No thank you Hypoponera. You're a pal. It's interesting when I got it at the LHS he said it was Tyco but I was too smart for that.
Enjoy!

Matt your RS-2 looks great! Though I'm left wondering did you ever get to working on your new layout or is it just parked on a makeshift track deal?

Unfortunately, it's just on a piece of track.

I have mostly all the track pieces I need, the big thing holding me back right now is finding some roadbed. And the cash to pay for the roadbed. It's really starting to get on my nerves!

I'm also considering putting the track directly onto a sheet of foam, because I'm more concerned with reducing noise than anything else.

Foam sheet on top of plywood, best of everything Yea I know what you mean about not having cash sometimes to buy stuff. I have money to get whatever I want train wise. But I'd much rather keep saving so I can get a house to put all this stuff into! And I'm sure once I get a house I'll be back in the same boat as you lol.

I posted my RI Alco and Shark before so this is what I have to offer. The original MU2 was used in an other project and this was scraped. When I saw another one on the "bay last week I decided to take the power from an SF Alco of the same era. The front plow was missing so I figured what the heck and used sheet plastic to make another and painted it with common craft store acrylics. It now has hand rails and I'll try to update the picture. I also replaced the missing window glazing with "package" acetate. Lucky it still had horns.

Here is the updated pic. Has handrails now and I used crafts acrylic paint to touch up the paint chips. Looks better I think.

Hey MM 1498- I think I am a little farther in the process of building my layout, but I am stuck at the same thing as you (roadbed). I think I am going to use roofing shingles for my roadbed, along with maybe a little Woodland Scenics ballast. I thought about using rock salt, but figured It would be hard to paint and it would probably dissolve when I painted or glued it, and if it didn't dissolve then It might corrode the rails. I tried to find a house getting a new roof, but I live in a fairly small town and I only found one, but they put the new roof over the old one . I think I am just gonna have to shell out the 20 bucks for a pack from Lowe's. I don't know how big your layout is going to be, but It might be worth it to spend 20 bucks on shingles instead of maybe even a 100 on Woodland Scenics ballast. Hope this helps!

It used to have a roadnumber and was a CN loco. You can still kind of see it under the weathering, like the real thing!

The F9 is a stock Model Power paint job,
I bought a pair of them, one powered and one dummy.
I did modify the pilots (they were broke off) I spliced in Tyco pilots to the shells.
