Hello all,
I am new here, so please pardon if this has been covered before.
I have three Tyco passenger cars (streamlined type) and a Santa Fe F7. I would like to add a B-unit and two more passenger cars. So, will the F7 reasonably pull a dummy and five passenger cars? These are maybe 30+ years old, but I have cleaned up the F7 and it seems to run well on a short test track.
If I need more power, I could motorize the dummy using parts that came in the box with all the engines and cars. But, will the horn and hook couplers allow the two engines to pull together? Is there any point to a motorized B-unit? Or, should I add a second motor to the A-unit?
Unfortunately, I do not have a lot of HO track or I could determine this experimentally. I am fixing them up for a grandson of a friend. So, let me know what your advice would be.

Hi Bruce !
to motorisize the B unit is the better choise for me. I have a Tyco and a Bachmann F. fortunately they have the same speed and they pull good together. I have no no problem with the horn hooks.

Hey Bruce. It depends on a few different things: what type of motor the engine has, what type of transformer you're using, etc... It's also nearly impossible to find two indentical running Tyco's, so it depends alot on the engine. Most of the time I run my Tyco streamliners with a powered engine, a dummy and 3-4 cars. If you're engine is a smooth runner, you should be able to get away with 5 cars and a B-unit. Any heavier and the engine will probably start spinning it's wheels Good luck!

Hey there...
Like what was already said above....how many cars the locomotive can pull depends on several factors: How steep of grades on the layout? What kind of transformer are you using, how clean are the loco's wheels and motor? What kind of motor is on your Tyco? The MU-2 (Identified by the metal truck bottom with three holes in a line), or the Powertorque (The motor with all the gears visible on the right side). I find the Powertorque to be a bit more powerful (at least on my layout)...and one of my locomotives can easilly handle 15 modern freight cars with ease. As long as your tracks are level, clean, and smoothly connected, the engine in good working order, and the wheels on your rolling stock in good free wheeling condition, I think you would not have any problem running the train you have spoken of. If you have not done so already, I would at least buy a good modern transformer.
