Also a Rio Grande, Milwaukee, and Western Pacific coming. Wonder if they will do any more?

And we've come full circle! Hooray!
One of the reasons behind the hobby's price increases has arguably been the refusal of manufacturers to do these kinds of "fantasy" paint schemes. Instead, they go through the expense of tooling specific models, and have to recoup the expense through limited prototype appeal.
And yet, historically, expanding the market via "fantasy" roads was how Athearn, et al was able to pay for the tooling on their older models!
To wit: just TRY to find a picture of a B&O FP45, or Burlington DD40. These are among Athearn's most famous models (and just scratch the surface of what was offered). Back then, they were freely released. Modelers who knew better were free to grumble and ignore them, but enough were sold regardless!
I do hope this continues, even with the disclaimer (which helps to educate the new generations of railfans... I'll admit my learning assumptions were oft led astray by incorrect models).
I doubt prices will come down, but dang. They should have been doing this all along. Even if I'm trying to stick to the mid-80's at max, that Chessie AC44 looks cool. A "The Rock" version would look even better.

Santa Fe, BN, those would be fairly easy to do.
I'd wanna see Delaware and Hudson, or big-name passenger trains, like the Rock Island Rocket!

For the longest time, I thought chessie had hordes of brightly painted F7's running around in their livery (There were a few F7's under Chessie but they never got painted). I learned the hard way that about 10% of the loco's I had never existed at all lol. But as time went on and I learned more I began to appreicate those locos because they were sorta oddball and didn't fit in anywhere with all the new prototype stuff being sold. I've been in the market for a widecab for awhile, either a AC or a bigger SD would have done just fine. Only thing is aside from BN, SP, or Conrail there is really no such thing as a fallen flag widecab. I was gonna pick up a Athern Conrail unit till I saw these came out. It will be nice since it will be be a wolf in sheeps clothing since most my engines are theme'd from the 50's-70's Seriously I just wanted a wide cab because nobody else I know has one. I showed the AC4400 Chessie to my rivet counter friend and it drove him nuts haha. I have to wait till the fall, but hey hopefully I'll have my own layout by then. Better make the turns big enough!

I think it is great, after all my layout is my "world", my "railroad". If my railroad has a varied fleet from steam to the latest diesels, so be it. It is for my enjoyment, my escape.
Actually look at Union Pacific's fleet, including it's steam program. They kept alot of their "stuff".
Canadian National never owned a big boy, but my CN does...
I think I'll even make a high hood C630 in CN colours.
