I was kicking this idea around for awhile. Seeing pictures of other peoples stuff I figured there was probably lots of old Tyco rolling stock that had some nice updates/weathering applied. But one or two cars might not be worth a whole post most days. So I figured what the heck I'll try this and see if others bite. Non Tyco stuff is fine, point I'd like to get across is you took something cheap and made it into a star

I have two right now. First off is something everyone owns at least 6 of, the green BN 50' boxcar. Mine keeps going though phases, its getting to a point where I'm starting to get happy with it.

I screwed up on the roof a little. The chalk I'm using for rust kinda sucks and it gave off a yellowish effect. So it might get revisited soon. I based how I painted it on just checking out various photos of BN boxcars. Noticed common themes on how they were painted and just went from there.

This one could probably use more work. But I really like the Tyco hoppers I think they are pretty good looking for their time. I wanted to give the effect the hopper has been used before. So the easy thing was just masking the lip and giving the inside a light spray. Which I later realized that would never be the case in real life lol. So this one will get dry brushed and chalked eventually.

The dump doors underneath do have a coal dust effect, I just need to carry it out over the whole hopper.

Anywho I just wanted to get this started. I have one or two more that I'm holding back for a bit. The one is a full repaint of a 50' Tyco boxcar that was a result of a failed weathering attempt. But I think when its done it might be one of the classiest looking pieces I own. Hope to have that done this weekend. Feel free to post your weathered odds & ends!

I like the double door Erich, I need to pick up one of those someday.

I changed the title of the topic of "Tyco" to "Cheap" to drum up some more business. Worse comes to worse I have a few more I can share here Anywho I picked this up awhile ago at the local hobby shop. It was tucked away on a shelf for 5 bucks. Dunno why I originally passed on it, but a day later I made a trip there just to pick that car up lol. It was made by Bachmann & came with kadee's which was nice for the price. Took it home with intent to experiment on it. Hit it with some chalk & weathering spray. Sprayed the roof walk black just to break it up a little and glued the doors. Dullcoated the whole thing and decided that was enough!

Nice work guys...

...cheap and cheesie Lima found in a shed. The "weathering" was already done by the elements, arachnids and a passing rodent or two. I just added lettering and weathered over that, then covered the whole smack with a coat of Dulcote.

Thats a very mildly weathered car. I only used heavy thinned revell matt white (colour should be close to cars body) to fade the lettering and get away from the plastic look.

So i got the effect of an old and bleached out lettering.

thats always my first step, when i start a weathering projekt.

but in this case i keep the car in this condition.

I like the Athearn PC U-boat. I have an undecorated one I will have to paint in PC decor.
I have to get some photos of my weatherd cars but I do have photos of weathered locos.

Hello Chris, I purchased the Chessie F already weathered. Sure looks like it missed a few appointments with the wash rack!

Ray, I love your locomotives. Would like to see a larger shot of your engine facility.

Hey Ray, what's in that last picture, a Baby Baby Trainmaster?

Anyway, I think I'm gonna stick an old Roundhouse car on my fence outside for a while, just to see what happens!

Here's a sampling of mine. I did these all several years ago, but I would love to get back to weathering again and plan to do so this year. I'm working on a page for my website to describe these (and others):

And of course, the first one:

Got that Roundhouse car outside now, I wonder how long it will take before something noticable happens...

I'm just gonna leave this here...

Back on topic So I had another Tyco 50' at my disposal, a Sante Fe El Captain car. I just used it as a test bed for everything. Painted the doors, used several weathering techniques, etc. While it did look really cool, the pictures don't show off the slight pink color the car gave off. So while it looked decent it just didn't set well with me. I got the idea to push it further.

I had a bunch of Pennsylvania Railroad decals leftover from a 40' boxcar kit I did and I was dying to use them. I got this crazy idea in my head that I could make the decals for a 40' boxcar work on a 50'. My other crazy idea was using actual auto primer to get the color I needed. The end result is probably my favorite thing I've done to date. I was going to give it a dark wash, but right now I'm just enjoying the dullcoat look

I actaully put hook-horns back on it, it just ran better that way. Its a bit of a one off. You won't find PRR cars that look exactly like it, but sorta close. Personally I love how it came out.

Hey, there's actually some changes in my boxcar, even though it's only sat for a few days...the most noticable change is that it has disappeared.

So I've put a Life-Like f-unit shell outside instead, and this time it's not in the open so much. Still exposed to the elements though.

So while taking pictures of the new 2-10-2, two of my friend's live stock cars were on a siding in the background. They were such a bright yellow they dominated background of the shot. So I snatched them off the layout and said "I'll bring these back when they don't resemble small suns" haha. Dunno what I'm going to do with the 2nd one, but the first one was my first real successful test with oil paints & a ink wash. Pretty awesome what you can do with oils!

Curious bovines and a farmer wonder how the car got so dirty in a week.

Originally the roof wasn't gray I painted it. The whole car was bright molded plastic yellow minus the doors. Few things I would have did differently but I'm happy with the outcome.

So in the cache of stuff we got from one of a buddy of ours, my friend ended up with his 3rd Bachman 50' boxcar done in Chessie System yellow. So he let me have the latest one, and naturally I just began experimenting lol. The difference this time was I did far more planning on how I was going to weather the car. REALLY happy with the result. Its a bit over done, but it was also my first attempt and paint patches so I really like it.
