Hey Bob , if you`re into building models lately you should try picking up the ERTL 1/35 Ford LN9000 snowplow/dumptruck. I have been building one for a few years now and it is a task. Not for the faint at heart. It will keep you busy for hours.

Here's what I bought. Also had a black Porsche, a T rod, a Purple Passion in gray and pearl,a Ford Shelby prototype and a blue Enzo.
Alex I think the plow sounds tough to build.

Guys:
You have to stop shopping at HellMart! It's a bad company. They are bad for local economys!
Is your life really about I saved .69 cents on that at Walmart!
Sorry for the rant. I spend too much time looking at what will happen to us in suburb loving NA when we start to loose cheap oil!
rant over, Mea Culpa.

I tend to agree on principle, but the ills facing NA via retail go beyond Wal-Mart. All the discounters sell the same crap. And survive on minimal wage and few full-time employees.
Speaking of WalMart though, it would be nice to have options. But here in Frankfort as well as hundreds of other communities, if you want the kind of stuff shown above, not to mention other things - it's either "go to WalMart", or waste untold time and gas driving somewhere else. Or pay shipping for the same Chinese garbage from an internet seller.
In Frankfort we do have a K-mart, but you don't go there unless you're desperate enough to risk the thoughts of suicide. I really can't figure how that chain stays in business... the store is so depressing and devoid of life.

Believe me, if there was another store in town that sold Fresh Cherries, or model paint, or whatever, I would be buying it there.
Problem is, around here Wal-Mart is the only store that carries anything of use for model railroading...

Hey Guys:
Guess how they got to be the only game in town......
As to the Ill's GIC. Walmart is the poster child for what ails us. I haven't set foot in one in years. Nature will take care of Walmart. As oil resources decline and our culture/economy changes the Walmarts cheap supply lines will become too costly for it to maintain it's competitive edge. We'll either get more local or we'll die. The math is simple AND we will be better for it though it's really gonna hurt. Hopefully all the people on talk radio will starve first!?
Ok, thats another rant in the books...

Couldn't you take the money you saved and spend it at a little guys shop. We're all looking for a bargain here! Should we quit buying inexpensive Tyco compared to the price of new stuff to help the economy. Oh and stop buying of the internet and buy only new at the LHS. Gee, it's just a hobby! I thought I was just pointing out something interesting when I posted this. I hope no hobbyists were harmed in the writing of this thread.

Hey AF:
Sorry about that. There are no freebies. Theres a price to pay for the buck you saved down the road. I wish I didn't know what I know. Save your neighbours jobs and yours. Buy as local as you can.
Anyway I made my point.

This is quickly turning into a rant... LOL
Romcat, in theory I completely agree with what you are saying, but I disagree that is the only thing that has ruined rural America.
Growing up, we had to go 45 minutes away to get affordable clothes for school and special events. There were few mom and pop places that only focused on high end, very pricey things.
There's a men's store that my brother bought all of his school clothes and it's still there and where my family shops for men's wear. But for little girls and women (hard to fit mind you) the closest major town away.
There was a super K and after the Big K came in across from the third walmart location in this town, they finally had decent enough clothes. That town grew and now you only had to travel 15 minutes away.
It's damned if you don't and damned if you do. For the record, we do buy local as much as possible. I actually work for a state agency that works with agriculture producers to assist with marketing local direct to consumers and wholesale to retailers (chains and independents).
Anywho, I can rant on both sides of this thing day and night, as I'm very passionate about it, too. But there are no simple answers.
And if you develop a principle for your own family - say no MIC toys for presents - one comes off as pretentious and snotty.

Not the only thing, Hon. But it is an enormous contributer because of it's dollar value it can destroy and does destroy other merchants.
Fortunately I don't care if someone doesn't liike my try not to buy Chinese policy. They are piling profits into a crash program to build a Submarine fleet to oppose the US Navy's. I wore a uniform in a NATO Army in the cold war, not gonna help my future enemies.
As to the Agro thing good on ya! Anything that gets people buying local produce particularly if they are not factory farms is great. I expect to spend next year on an Organic farm Internship so I can go off and start my own "Market Garden" farm.
Btw, just to go back to the Walmart thing for a minute. Saying someone has to go to Walmart to save money to me is like saying I bought that laptop for $100 and I knew it must be stolen but "I" didn't steal it, are close to the same thing. America's production base is being sold out and it's gonna really matter down the road. Anyway, I could go on endlessley about this but I've made my decisions. Still trying to make up my mind about mail-order stuff which add the expense on several levels of oil consumption. OTOH getttiing to exteme is not healty is it.
Best, Gareth

This topic started out as a hotwheels car thread and ended up as an argument over local economy and wal-mart . . .
