Hello All-- Just wanted to share my very low-tech background I've installed on my little pike. I've pretty-much succeeded in making my layout "convertible," meaning I can change from an American theme to a British theme by replacing removable buildings and details. Each item, like a station or a telegraph pole, has both a US and British counterpart. It's not perfect, but keeps me from having to build a new layout if I change themes. For the backdrop, I did the following: 1) Installed an 8 inch tall masonite panel with mountains and sky on the wall. 2) Installed an 8 inch shelf above it (white). 3) Applied a 1x2 trim piece and a 3 inch blue valance to the front of the shelf. 4) Installed a small flourescent light under the shelf, covered with orange paper. 5) Place 'false mountains' in front of the rear main line and siding to help disguise them. I also put a plane on a thin blue wire sticking out of the valance. When turned on, I get a neat sunset effect, and the building and street lights in the foreground complement this. I hope this pic somewhat gives an idea of the effect.

I read about this in Model Railroader some time back, and thought it was ingenious!
One thing I was thinking, was that putting some pink bulbs (if you could find any) in with the orange might look a little better. Or like some horrible pink lemonade and orange juice concoction raining down on the unsuspecting people.
But hey, it looks great on your layout. Like a big ol' sunset at the end of a western movie...
