How did you fix it? It looks like this one suffers from split axle disease, which Bachmann steamers are infamous for. The plastic axle cracks and the wheels go out of quarter. You can re-quarter them by eye, then once you get it right use a bead of CA to join the axle and the wheel so it doesn't slip again.
The smoke unit should work if not damaged. I think any smoke fluid will work, but those units make a mess, and the oil dumps out if you turn the loco on its side.

I have one, it ran well for a while and now clunks like one of the wheels isn't properly quartered. Again and again I check, but everything looks as it should, no cracks or misaligned wheels...I hate it!

The split axel thing is common on older and even first run spectrum locos. Also if you are checking a split frame loco and the wheels are locked and not out of quater. Look carefully at the bottom. If the leading drive axel is tilted towards the pilot, or the last driver axel is tilted towards the rear pilot truck one or both of the split frame metal castings have corrosion problums. This is what is locking the axels in place. The casting as it corrodes actualy grows to the fromt, or rear, or in both directions. On the 4-8-4s power is supplied to the rear axel. If the front axel is only locked the motor will drive the wheels out of quater, further locking up the drive. I have noticed this on many older Bachmann steamers. I have seen it so bad that the cylinders are not lined up anymore. Even where the valve hanger connection into the frame has broken off by the cast elongating foward increasing the distance between the cylinders and this connection point. frank
