I have a 1978 tyco HO train set I am trying to bring back to life. I am very new to this and do not have the vocabulary down just yet. I got some advice from Tony on how to get started as the locomotive was not working. Doing my test I know the power pack is good and it getting the power to the track so my Loco must be bad. I am wondering if it will be easier/better to just purchase a new Loco as opposed to trying to fix the existing one? Looking into getting a new one I have some quedtions on the vocabulary. What is the difference between DCC Equipped, DCC Ready and Standard DC? Which one will I need? Any information is greatly appreciated. THANKS!!

hi SONNYELLIS, firstly would clean all contacts on loco and tender ie wheels only the metal ones pickup current, pickups etc,and oil and grease loco,as regards dcc thats full digital control (no good for your tyco) dcc ready means it can be converted to (no good to you and finally dc which is what you have (direct current) ken

Ken, that is awesome information. I am going to get started on cleaning and greasing and oiling the loco to see if it comes back to life. If not, now I know what type of loco I need to get. Thanks a bunch, really appreciated.

OK, now that I have cleaned the wheel connections and re-checked to make sure the proper current was getting to the tracks I have made progress. The loco got power and moved a few inches then electrical smoke started coming out if it. Every time I try in now it willl pop a little with more smoke. The headlight on the loco will come on now so I know it is getting full power but I don't know if it is just fried now or what. Any more advice? Thanks!!

did you oil and grease it as the older oils and grease tend to clog up.sounds like the motor needs all the rubbish removed as its probably seized after little use,do not put power on full at this point,i would strip motor but depending on loco depend how hard that will be,whats the loco ken

Ken, it is a 1978 Tyco Silver Streak. Really other than that I would not know what to tell you. I can probably take some pics and post them if that will help.

I did not lube it. How should I go about doing that? Will 3m oil work? Point me in the right direction for that. Thanks

when you have had a loco for a number of years always check the oil and grease as the early models used yuk for lubing use something like labelles oil and grease ken would not recommend any of the old fashioned oils

I was wrong, the loco is a midnight special. The gears are almost impossible to move by hand. Where can I get that type of oil and grease? Thanks for all this help and advice.

Hey Ken, that is it. I have greased and oiled the gears. However it is still unresponsive still on the track. I am so afraid that I fried it before I oiled and greased it. I guess this will be one of those learn the hard way deals. However you have certainly helped me increase my knowledge. I have already ordered a new loco as a just in case and should be here in about a week. Thanks again! Sonny
