I don't know of a source of substitute springs, except springs from a Bachmann or Life Like pancake motor, which I believe are the same size. I've got a few from PT junkers.

It's all about what we had as kids, right? You must be very good to your engines if it's still running after all of these years. My first Chattanooga moved to the rip track after the pinion gave out, but it got a lot of use. I even put extra weight in the tender to make it pull ridiculously long trains.
Those replacement brush springs should do fine.

Have you tried the brushes and springs from Athearn? Also, I have gotten some good milage with using just the springs without the brushes. Just strech the springs out and they will pass current to the commutator. The spring can cause excess wear on the commutator surface though.

I dont know if this will help with the chatanooga but I recently got a Powertorq drive running again with a simple fix.
I cleaned the armature of all its goop & grease the brush springs were flat with no "spring left"
I used AFX slot car Brush Springs I had extras of, I had to trim the length but they worked fine I also think the AFX brushes are the same diameter.
It might be worth a look in the slot car isle of the hobby shop for brush springs you can substitute.
It got me thinking about rewinding the armature and adding stronger magnets like the slot car guys do to increase the power Maybe some day I'll "hop up" my Spirit of 76 Alco and see if it works.

thanks , ive also noticed if you torq the screws to much it runs slower ,i bought one yesterday for 10.00 off craigs junk it just needed a good cleaning of the armature . as far as adding wire to 1 , i never tried it , i guess keep adding until it starts to rub the casing and subtract just a little and make sure it spins freely . good idea. let me know if you get r done . great smoker for ten bucks.check out the smoke blasting out of bottom. wow my others dont smoke like this old hippy.
