Hi all,
anybody collecting Lionel HO of the 70's? In a German book about model railways I found some pictures of the Lionel crane car. Now, it looks quite familiar to me. Can anyone tell me something about the maker? Lionel imported mainly from China these days.

The picture shows a similar looking Bucyrus Erie crane from Roco (this one's Czechoslovakian Ry.). Also Pemco had this type of crane.
Is the Lionel crane chinese or austrian made?
Thanks a lot,
Martin

| 70's Lionel started out made in the USA and shifted to Kader-made items in China or Hong Kong. The crane is an oddball, though. I don't have the book that covers the 70s stuff but I'm sure it tells where it originated.

Thanks a lot! Don't have this book either. Maybe somebody in this forum has the crane and/or book and might check? The Kader crane looks different.
Same with the Lionel 40' UP flat car, would like to know its origin.

Frank, I noticed that the orange crane you posted earlier looks much different from the PRR and UP ones you have posted.
The PRR and UP ones look like Athearn...unless Athearn used the Lionel moulds. They must have, right?

Well MM, I know for sure that Lionel had Athearn make their Lionel HO line for some time, but not sure exactly "what time"...
I have an informitive vid. on Lionel HO recorded at my dad's house, when I can see it again, I can give you a time period, what they mention on those cranes...

Per Greenberg's Guide to Lionel HO volumes 1 and 2, 6 wheel cranes offered were:
1958-60, made by Athearn (red UP cab)
1961-63, made by Lionel themselves (orange IC cab)
1974 -77, made in Austria by Roco (black UP or C&O cab)

The Athearn crane was produced in all die cast metal in the 1950s before they went to plastic. The Lionel crane is made by Athearn for them.
I belonged to a club that had a work train including a die cast Lionel "hook" as it was referred to. It took a lot of traction to pull the train with that heavy die cast beast in tow.

Just Came to realize That Lionel HO featured in the early 60's a 2-4-2 along with a 0-4-0 and the 4-6-2 pacific I already have.
Speaking of those HO Lionel Pacific's Frank (TT) don't you have a few of them? I wondered if you ever swapped out those Ungawdfully bad drivers they had, sorta semi-solid spoke drivers!
Has anyone seen one of the early 60's 2-4-2 steamers?
I have as I said above one of the 4-6-2 Steamers, an Erie Centercab (Husky chassis), a Husky, an Alco FA in CNR (original box with unbroken sideframes retainer clips)... I'd like to get a 2-4-2 and a what was the electric Loco they made called? They are pretty uncommon and a little pricey for what they are.
