I have a shoe box of HO scale Rivarossi 2-8-8-2 parts and mechanisms - to the extent that building an engine out of it all now looks feasible.
I am missing a motor & the chassis plate is the one that came with the older style 'in line' gearbox/driveshaft set up.
I think the motor is #35 on page 1 of HO Seeker's 1972 Rivarossi Y6B Mallet diagram. It looks like 3 slices of bread pressed together with the corners rounded. Perhaps better described as a 'square' donut style without a hole in the middle??
I am assuming I won't be able to locate one so am considering 'repowering'. Has anyone repowered one of these old chassis & if so, what brand/model of motor did you use?
Thank you

I've never quite heard those motors described that way.
What you're describing is the old Rivarossi ball bearing motor. I actually removed mine in favor of a CD tray motor, which required minimal modification of the motor mount.

Here's a picture of it with a CD spindle motor, which was the first one I tried. I wasn't satisfied with the low-end torque. The CD tray motor is the same diameter, but about half the length. I replaced the old driveshafts with NWSL universals.
I have the original motor, if you're interested.

Nice installation. Thank you for old motor offer. Will pass at this stage as I would like to follow your approach & remotor. At this stage it would sit in a box unused & perhaps someone else is looking for one & could use it.
Also thanks for ideas re the type of new motor & driveshaft treatment.
BTW - I have replaced the original plastic short driveshaft from the motor to 1st Gbox on 2 'newer' Y6B's [dog leg Motor/Dshaft/Gbox/Dshaft/Gbox run], with neoprene tube and have noticed they both run quieter. Tanked

Yep, that first shaft arrangement was terrible. The short shaft was supposed to work on an angle, which slotted shafts like those can't do. The previous owner had tried to improve it, but without success. I used silicone tubing myself at first, but the universals are smoother.
All I had to do with the brass mount was elongate the top screw hole so it would line up with one of the holes in the Mabuchi motor. It's a CD tray motor of the same dimensions as the one used by GIC and others for the Frankentorque mod.

Thanks, Gareth. Giving you ideas?
I think it's easier to retrofit these earlier versions with the brass mount. The revised versions with the round motor mounted on the boiler weight have better hex-type drive shafts, but are probably harder to modify.

Just absorbing.
Ant-man "Hypo..." Sent me a teriffic couple of articles about steam detailing from the 97 MR.
I have a Mehano Mike with no motor to repower and a an MDC 0-6-0T that I plan to convert to a 0-6-4T that will run in reverse as a car-float puller and transfer engine...
So when I see these I always have a good look...
