Reminds me of a great railroad/model railroad museum in Clovis New Mexico which houses, among other things, an Australian-based layout featuring the "Ghan" train. http://www.clovisdepot.com/

The scenery on that layout looks awesome. Never seen anything quite like it.

It's always cool seeing the different places people choose to model. Before I built my current layout, I was thinking about building one modelled after a city on an old racing video game I have. In the end I decided I didn't have enough room, but I'd still like to do it someday

That's not REALLY desert scenery. Just a typical dry summer scene that could be in many parts of Australia. I certainly don't live in the desert, but during drought, it can look like that - all brown.

I noticed a Brisbane commuter train on the layout too. You won't see those in desert areas.

I haven't been to the Workshops Museum, so haven't seen the layout, but from what that video shows, perhaps one end of the layout is city and the other end desert, with a rural section in between. Looks to be worth a visit next time I'm up that way.
