Here is a pic of my small Marklin layout, only 35" deep by 55" long. Designed to be portable and taken to shows, small loop with siding for the passenger cars, small yard in the middle and 2 main industries. The one at the front left is the box factory, and the one in the middle off the yard will be a brewery. All the catenary is vintage Marklin and fully functional. The track is all "M" track, tinplate road bed with stud contact center rail. I need to get started on roads soon, been waiting to get all the building kits bought and built before tearing up grass and putting down the roadways. Enjoy! Mike

Very nice!! I admire when someone is able to create a beautiful and functional layout in a small space, while being able to operate "normal" equipment. You've definitely hit the mark. I'm still "in the process." Mine is 4x6 feet with a new 'fiddle' yard attached. At the moment, it lacks the refinements and aesthetics of your pike, but my goal is to be able to operate normal-sized equipment somewhat realistically--and have a stage to display my classic Tyco/Mantua and growing collection of British outlines.

Great start on your layout, mine is about 5 years along right now. Marklin is the Mercedes Benz of model trains with the price to match, so each phase has taken time to purchase. The catenary alone is over $300. I bought the towers last year and the wires this year. I have a proper E lok on its way that I won on ebay, along with a 2-6-2 class 23 that will handle the mixed traffic. I will have my 4 main engines now, and can start picking up bier wagons for the brewery and a few box wagons for the box factory. Staying mostly with 2 axle cars to keep the older short line look. I can run thier 2-10-0 decapods easily around my curves due to the clever design in the chassis from Marklin. There is a give point just ahead of the 2nd from the rear driver set. The side rods are slotted to allow movement. The drivers on all the older Marklin engines are geared with spur gears, so the side rods are just for looks. This overcomes any issues with binding when going around tight curves. Other than N scale, No other HO line can do this much activity in such a small space. I have some USA stuff, mantua, atlas ect that I run at the local club. If I try to push one thru the curves on the Marklin layout, most everything binds! The Radius is around 14 or 15" I believe. I have half the turnouts wired up for remote control, need one more control box from Marklin to finish up the rear turnouts. There is an interchange track at the left rear corner. A buddy of mine has a similar layout and we connect together with an additional yard table between my layout and his when we set up at shows. I may have just enough room to make a tight left turn and go along the front wall for a narrow shelf yard. I have plenty of track to do this. Cheers Mike
