This is the worst version of the Chattanooga Train set made as i purchased one new in 1992. The engine ran terrible and the train cars in the set were awful. The Texaco tank car in this was so light weighted it would de-rail. If you are going to buy a Chattanooga set--find one made in the 70's through around 1987 for better quality. In this set-the locomotives is non smoking where as the original version released in the 70's has a smoking loco. Some of the later 80's sets had a non smoking locomotive also. If this lady gets a $110.00 for it--more power to her. http://cgi.ebay.com/Vintage-Tyco-Chattanooga-Choo-Choo-HO-Train-Set-in-Box_W0QQitemZ400018417832QQcmdZViewItemQQptZModel_RR_Trains?hash=item400018417832&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=66%3A2%7C65%3A10%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318#ebayphotohosting

The only thing that set has going for it is the box artwork. Looks like a Norman Rockwell painting.

Actually I thought the 1992 set was pretty well done. I have the full sets of both the 1992 and a 70's version, and the 1992 is light-years better in terms of performance. The smokeless engine IS a bit of a let-down, but it runs far better than the PT-tender engines. The decoration of the cars is pretty nice too (I would much rather have that full-data 1992 Texaco car over the crappy 70's version), and they have the newer trucks with improved rolling characteristics.
The whistle billboard was battery operated, which can be either pro or con.
I guess the very early Chattnooga sets/engines with full valve gear and the included crane car might trump this one in charm and looks - but still won't run as well. But I wouldn't touch a late 70's/80's version over the 1991-93.
Just my own opinion.

The loco in the auction is missing its entire pilot, and she wants $110? Yikes. I don't think it's worth anything near that complete.
I think by this time Tyco had given up on the Powertorque tender drive, and contracted Mehano to make this 0-8-0 or 2-8-0, whichever it was originally, so it had to run better. Funny that they used their Pacific/Mikado boiler, since it's awfully long not to have a trailing truck. Mehano inherited the original Consolidation tooling, which they've used for their own 0-8-0's and 2-8-0's.
I remember seeing that Ralston Purina high cube boxcar somewhere, which had a drum full of beads that rolled on the rails as a "sound" unit.

I've seen one around at recent trainshows, heck I almost bought it one time. It had the Baby Ruth paint.
I thought it was a track cleaner of some sort when I first saw it.

I don't know about the worst Tyco set ever, but I just saw a set that seems to have been a bit under-rated. In the the yearly issue of "Toy Trains" for 1986, a Tyco set was advertised for $30, and included the C430, 3 cars and caboose. It included the auto rack and unloading ramp, a bridge and trestle set, and a set of signs and poles. It had track and power pack. Ironically, the magazine chose the Bachmann set as their 'budget' pic. At $34, it only had 2 cars, and no accessories. I wonder if Tyco's rep had fallen that far by then as to have allowed a more expensive, less-equipped set to win the titile of "budget?"

Hey, i have that locomotive, and it has like what looks like mehano on the bottom, but anyways, thta loco will go better if weight is added in the smoke box, and between the 1st and 2ed drivers, lol, (personal experience) i recived this loco, plus a 0-4-0 for free, and they both run.
It's a long way to the top if you want to Rock N' Roll.

I sent the seller a message about the missing pilot, and although I didn't get a reply, she did lower the price to $75. What a steal.

It's missing the headlight, too, assuming it had one to begin with.
That's a super-economy version of the USRA Light Mikado, which has been sold as AHM, Model Power and now IHC, the latest versions have a revised bell, flywheel and DCC. Shares boiler and tender with the USRA Pacific (which Life-Like also sold).
I'm surprised it has no weight inside, though, the engine really needs it. These engines have been around for so long I'm always picking up basket cases to fix - usually scrap one to fix two or three others.
I wonder if something happened to the dies for the PT drive tender? It kind of dissapeared about 1990 there and that I know of hasn't been seen since, not even the shell.

I agree Tyco made some crappy motors-but i still have engines from the 70's that run fast and strong. It's a crap shoot. The Key to longevity is oiling and grease.

Stupid question , but what exactly happens over time if you do not oil or grease regulary? Will the motor burn out, or become sticky....cuz i have no oil or lube and run my few trains dry...

Sohan - running dry can cause overheating due to lack of lubrication. Tyco motors don't take heat to well. Can lead to motor failure. You want any locomotive to move freely as can.
