Hi All,
I have an F9a with what looks to be an MU-2 motor with the plastic bottom that screws on with 2 screws and plastic coupler pocket. The problem I'm having is that the engine will go forward but when I stop to go backward it will move backward for a split second and then stop. I then have to nudge it to get it to move. When I want to go forward again I have to nudge it to get it to move. I did clean it with contact cleaner ( plastic safe ).
Any help would be great.
Thanks Mike

Mike,
This must be the F9 with the Roco made plastic MU-2 that sold just before the PowerPorque trucks came out. I was given one for my birthday back around 1974, and it was one of the bad experiences that soured me on Tyco. The motor was weaker than a typical MU-2, so it was an erratic runner, and the plastic cracked quite easily.
I'm not sure why it won't run in reverse, but I would remove the brushes and clean them by hand, and drop them in a solvent like Goof Off or even Gumout carburetor cleaner (don't use them on plastic). If your contact cleaner is a strong aerosol, use it to blast out the gaps in the commutator, then scrape any remaining gunk out with a pin or piece of brass wire, for e.g. Hope this helps.

NP pretty much said it-- I have one also. Took the botton truck cover off, where you can clean and lube the axle bearings and motor bearings. Like he said, you can carefully clean the commutator, but I don't worry about removing the brushes (I've heard that can affect magnet strength). These also use brass pickup wipers, which should be clean also.
