Here are afew photos of my rebuilt Bachmann BQ23-7. It is the old shell ontop of a new Bachmann B23-7 chassie/mechanism. I replaced molded grabs with wire ones. I also replaced the damaged front and rear handrails with bent brass wire and Athearn stantions. The new Bahmann mechanism runs well, so I did not do any work with it. The chassie fit under the old shell after the fuel tank sides were cut away from the shell.

Great work on this Bachmann BQ! Which B'man chassis did you use? the new Standard Line B23/30-7?

Thanks for the info on the drive swap! I have both the Family Lines and Chessie BQ's and was wondering if the new drives would drop in. I have a third Chessie Q that I gutted into a dummy... I'm debating plating the windows and making a CSX "B" unit out of it.
It's really a solidly detailed engine for the era; the only major gripe I have is the cast-on nose grabs. But if you like the original paint jobs, what are you gonna do?

Yes, I used the new Standard line chassie for the B23/B30-7. I think the only problem fit wise is the front light bulb needed to be pushed towards the rear slightly.
I had also thought of making a model of the "B-unit" used by CSX. But I never got any further due to other projects. I am at the paint stage of my Athearn H16-66 kitbash. Afraid the idea of another FM project took priority over another GE.

Hypoponera, Not a bad job on the BQ! I have to say it looks great, and with the fuel tank for the frame you used, looks really good!
See, when I made mine, I also had the Bachmann "Plus" B23-7....BUT, mine is under a nicely painted Chessie System shell....Which is a no-no as far as removing the frame to go under my BQ, either one of them, as I have 2 BQ23-7's.... One in CSX as you seen and another in Seaboard "Family Lines" with a CSX road number and the 2 of them, I run as a MU set....The Family lines one has a really interesting future its going to be a 3rd unit MU to a B30-7, "Mother Unit" to a GE "MATE" set, and be on the other end as the GE MATEs were made to be powered from either end.......Which would be an interesting lash up of 3, having he BQ on the point.......
I jus had a look to post pictures of my other BQ23-7 in Seaboard paint, and I haven't got pictures of him yet.....So, I'll be sure to post pictures of that soon!

Thanks John! I used the Bachmann chassis as it was "available". I certainly wouldn't use a chassis off a favored loco for this project. Just too many other options available to make such a sacrifice worth while.
The old, blue-box Athearn B-B GE chassis will work fine instead. I would replace the original Athearn motor and make sure you get a later production frame that was designed for flywheels.
I look forward to seeing the photos! I always liked the look and use of the BQ23 idea. Too bad it didn't catch on.
