Hi Toptrain!
do you have one with a metal tender? or is the diecast tender only a Mantua thing?

The John English Mikado. An old 1950's die cast USRA light Mikado. This line was somehow aquired by Lionel and used for their HO line from 1960 to 1968. The ACL is old factory lettering . This one was ready to run.

Tayco... a broken pilot? I just bought one of these ( I believe yours is a Pennsy ) with a broken pilot...

Coincidence...
The hobby dealer ( I call him my "pusher" ) told me this locomotive was a Varney. But the more I inspected this locomotive, the more I saw common trademarks of Mantua... this is one heavy beast!
I see Mantua used #4073 on the Pennsy, New York Central, and Union Pacific...
...uh, without taking my locomotive apart, is this loco' of mine a Mantua or a TYCO?

When running this loco forward, it seems to be fine. But when in reverse, it likes to make that scowling sound. Far as I knew, that sound meant that the motor brushes need lubrication. Why the sound in only one direction? How can I remedy this? Was $18 CA a good price to pay for this hunk? AND... How may I remedy the plastic light-weight tender?
Any help, here?
Thanks for your time and attention.
John/Zebrails
(p.s. I'm trying to get back on track after a bit of rollercoaster situations.)

Hi john . this is frank. Don't look for differences between Mantua and Tyco steamers. Their ain't a hole lot. If your mike was a all metal with a standard MU1 motor their is a chance it is TYCO, but not much of one. If your mike has the worm gear inclosed in a cast part screwed to the top of the frame it is Mantua. When they were made their was no Tyco. As to your hobby dealer, are you sure he can read English. Also john never lubercate a motors brushes. Oil the shaft bearing where it passes thro the frame, front and rear, then on open frame motors rotate the motor shaft by hand to check for binding in the drive. A good piece of advice is never run a engine you purchased used under a train load till you clean and lube it properly. You can test run it but if it attempts to move only, and your inspection shows a unmaintained or damaged engine don't pay alot for it. Things could be bad. Look at it realy good then before you decide. Yes 18 was good! Last I don't want to say just add weight for their are many places you tender can have a problum. wheels ,axels, truck frame, truck frame to tender frame pichup. Light weight may not be the problum. I guess there is a lone steamer that isn't all that bad, and that would be the more modern streamlined Chessie System. (Don't know what the model number is or anything) But I just can't stand steamers like this . . .

Athearn's USRA light Mikado. I purchased a undecorated version a few years ago. Recently I decieded for it to join my Pennsylvania Railroad roster. During WW1 the USRA controled all steam engine manufacturing. The Pennsy wanted some lighter weight freight movers for their rural trackage and recieved 5 of the light Mikados. They are numbered 9627 to 9631. Athearn released a Pennsy version with a high mounted headlight which was right. The 4 marker lights were placed in a standard location, two on the smoke box front, and two on the tender rear in typical USRA locations and of a type not used by the Pennsy. Maybe they were delivered like this. I don't know. All photos I have seen show standard Pennsy marker lights in standard locations. Two in front on the pilots walking surface. The Pennsy always put them as close to the outside edge and as far fowrard as they would go. In the outer, foward corner of the pilot top surface. The rear two were mounted on the tender top surface as far rear ,and as close to the outside edge as they would go. Also a rear facing headlight was mounted centered on the rear top edge of the tender between the marker lights. Returing to the smoke box front, a round number board was centered on the smoke box door. A hand railing was mounted in a semicircle on the boiler front plate below the smoke box boor. Two steps were mounted above the top two handrail supports. Athearn diid not locate the marker lights in proper Pennsy fashion. also the bell and generator were not as Pennsy had located them. The bell should be centered atop the boiler between the sand dome and the steam dome. The generator should have been mounted on top of the boiler between the front boiler plate and the smoke stack. Here are photos of the Athearn loco I purchased. I wasn't able to get the Pennsy version but a undecorated standard USRA version, with the wrong boiler front as well.

With all respect due to Top Train, I would suggest that Frank is in error when he states that the Tyco Mikado never had a gear box. Tyco first cataloged the 2-8-2 in 1955. While there a few subtle differences the drive train is exactly like the original Mantua first cataloged as a kit in 1948.

Dt:
You've probably never seen a live one run. Here's a taste:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pBT8tTe0Hcs
Try to get to a rail museum where they run steam, so you can get the whole story...that wonderful smell of oil and coal and hot metal, the clanking rods, the radiating heat. There's a fiery simplicity to the whole thing. It's all there in front of you...the most fascinating part of a diesel is hidden away inside, where you can never see it. But a steamer doesn't have an engine...a steamer is an engine.
Even then you'll get only a taste of the story...you'll never be able to stand and watch doubleheaded I1's snorting around Horseshoe Curve, or Niagaras flying past on the 20th Century Limited. What a grand show it must have been!
One of my regrets as a mech. engineer is that I missed the age of steam.
You mention you like the C&O streamliner - it does have a visual interest, and it's colorful...but that only covers up the true nature of the beast, and that's something a steam fan doesn't always like.
It doesn't bother me that you said "yuck". I just think you're missing something fantastic...like a person who hasn't had some sort of delicious food and doesn't want to try it, because he doesn't think it will be good. It took me a while to understand all this...I was born long after the steamers went to scrap.
This is what fascinates steam modelers...it's a pity the little engines can't give us most of it, but they can feed the dreams. There's so much more, too...the steam-era railroad had so many buildings, so many tracks, so many stations, so many trains, so many people. It was an awesome show...and one I never saw.

Not that Autobus needs backup. But when I think of steam, these two videos immediately jump to mind. The display of power is just unmatched by anything on the rails today.

A gear box is a part into it self. Old original Mantua just attached a worm gear to a frame. It is more like a cover for the frame. Their was no box inclosure for the gears. No tower or anything. Gear boxs inclosed the driven axel and all gears. they had a input shaft and the output shaft that was the driver axel. All this was alone and seperate from the frame. That is why I wouldn't call what mantua had done a gear box. frank

Ah Frank, you are right! Even Mantua calls the part a gear cover. Your post inferred to me that you liked the gear cover setup. I love the self aligning feature that this part has. For those of you stuck in a oil electric model world heres what we are talking about.

The round bearings hold the worm in proper mesh with the drive gear. It eliminates the laborious job of aligning the worm when mounted directly on the motor shaft. I was just trying to point out that the early Tyco Mikado had this coveted feature until Nelson watch the bottom line Tyler took the company reins. The feature must have been eliminated in 1959 because the list price dropped from $39.95 to $29.95. that year.

Loopy : Maybe their was some kind of ression. Maybe it was just the fact that they redeveloped the MU1 motor and used it to power all their steam engines. They got rid of the large pitman motor and all those parts you show in that drawing. frank

I was wondering about something, when did Mantua start the chug sound tenders? I have a Mantua 2-8-2 that has it. Late 70's or 80's?

Ken : Trix has done a great job with their Mikado. The detail is great. It is like looking at a photo of the real thing. The Others had there detail cast on which is good. Trix has for the NYC all the proper detail made to scale and applied to the engine in the right places. Good luck with your Mikes. They are all great. Frank

* Well I have something new to post in my Mikado thread. My son Steve just recently finished his CNJ Super Mike. He started with his old Akane USRA Heavy Mikado he had earlier done for the CNJ. It went back into the Saylorsburg shops for a major rebuilding and came out recently. Here are 3 photos.
1- A CNJ T36 4-6-0c and a END F3 share the work at the Allentown yards with Mike 903.

2- 903 is hooked up and on its way.

3- Super Mike 903 pulls a coal train out of the yard going east. With her new large tender she'll go all the way to the Jersey City docks.

* Well for some reason I have not posted this USRA Heavy Mikado here in my Mikado's post. I got this model at the Mother Seaton Train show in Clark N.J. back on March 15 2015. It remains still in the same condition as these year and a half old photos show it to be. frank
first photo the label on the box.

Second photo the train inside the box.

Last phot the Mike on the track.

Thinking about the Mikado's I have had, one comes to mind, and another I never got is remembered. The one I had was by Marklin Hamo, the DC line of marklin. It was labeled "Von Ryan's Express". I always thought it was special but could never find a Marklin dealer anywhere to say if it was a Marklin release. Giving up on it, I did trade it away. It actually ran very well. I found a old photo of back when it was mine. The other one I still look for today is the Fleischmann 2-8-2 made for the American market. A German engine with a American front pilot, and a USRA tender. Seen many but with high prices. frank

I've seen all kinds of Mikes here, and all of them are gorgeous. I haven't seen an IHC/Mehano yet! Here's my one from the Canadian grocery store "Loblaws". This is a plain jane IHC 2-8-2, no Flywheel or anything fancy.
IHC is missed. Excellent steam locomotives at a great price.

Another Tyco Mikado:

A little paint and some detail parts have been added to improve its appearance and the motor has a bigger magnet for more torque, but it's still pretty stock.

I'll add my Western Pacific Mike, which is a modified Mantua 2-8-2. The pilot is Varney and it has a Helix Humper flywheel drive.

I see it has an oil tender. Was Western Pacific mostly oil fired like the Southern Pacific?
