I think it's Atlas/Roco E7.

| Nope! Not an Athearn. It is an E-unit made by Roco. You can tell by the metal+plastic trucks and that huge, round motor. The loco was imported and sold in the US by Model Power.

The motors in those old Rocos run forever. The gearing tends to be a little noisy, though, and sometimes the motors roar. I have one that's pretty quiet, and another that, well, to paraphrase a description I saw on the Atlas forum, sounds like a Hoover upright trying to vacuum marbles off a hardwood floor.

It is a Model Power by ROCO E7. And it is a puller. Noisy due to that strange loose coupling that ratles away. Change it to a piece of tubing and it will quiet down. frank

I've already done that to mine, but unfortunately the problem is an unbalanced armature.

If you are talking about the popping you feal when you turn the motor shaft that in normal for those motors. Did you put tubing 0n both shafts that go to drive trucks? Also gress all gears and oil motor bearings? frank

Yes, it's greased and oiled with Super Lube, and runs reasonably well, but the motor is unbalanced, as I said. In taking it apart I discovered that someone already tried to balance it by laying epoxy putty in the gap on the light side of the armature, but it either wasn't enough weight, or they overcompensated. I've found this in a number of these E7/8's I bought secondhand, so it's clearly a common problem a lot of modelers tried to remedy. Another trick is to drill holes in the laminations on the heavy side until it balances, but that's risky. Model Railroader had an article years ago about how to do this to old Athearn motors.
I haven't replaced the universals with silicone tubing. I've tried tubing with a length of shaft inside as a substitute for universals, but the tubing introduces friction in the bearings when the trucks turn. Better to replace them with NWSL universals, but I'm not going to invest the money. The gearing is also coarse with a lot of slop, and that causes the wheels to scrub the rails a bit. You can see it in the wear pattern on the wheel treads. Later versions of the FA and Shark had much finer-toothed gearing and shock-mounted motors that made them much smoother performers.

My kid bought that engine at York for 10 dollars.
I greased all those gears in the trucks and told him to knock himself out.
He has been running the heck out of it all week and aside from it sounding like a asphalt plant running at full tilt ...its fine.
The engine is a great puller

ATLAS ROCO...
A BOY AND A FLYROD... ER, FLYWHEEL...
GOT A BIT OF A HOWL? AH, YES INDEED.
SIR, AND SON... WITH THAT HOWL, YOUR LOCOMOTIVE IS GOOD FOR ANOTHER COUPLE OF DECADES... YES, DECADES!
I HAVE EXPRESSED MUCH HYPE ABOUT THESE LOCOMOTIVES BEARING THESE FINE MOTORS.
THESE MOTORS WERE FIRST BUILT TO POWER AILERON MOTORS OF WWII FIGHTER PLANES. WELL, THE WAR ENDED AND SUDDENLY THESE MOTORS WERE NOT NEEDED AND IN GREAT SURPLUS. SO A COMPANY, CALLED ROCO BOUGHT THESE MOTORS AND PUT THEM INTO MODEL TRAIN LOCOMOTIVES. THERE WERE A FEW PUT IN, TO POWER MODEL BOATS.
GOOD PULLER, YES IT IS AND WILL BE A FAVOURED LOCOMOTIVE BECAUSE OF IT'S RELIABILITY. MATTER OF FACT, THE WHEELS MAY GIVE OUT BEFORE THE MOTOR DOES. BUT DON'T WORRY. THIS LOCOMOTIVE WILL OUTLAST MANY ATHEARN AND...
okay, 'nuf of my apprasial... and praise.
Congrats on a great purchase. $10, eh? You got a Bently at the price of a Yugo.
I have now, completed my venting.
John
I don't have a one track mind. It depends on the turn-out. "I love your catenary!" Is that a power-trip or just another pick-up line?

They are virtually indestructable, and as a kid I would have agreed, the noisier the better!

I would love to know the history of that shot.
