Track Help!
Wednesday, October 01, 2008

I'm working on my TycoScene layout and starting to lay down some track. I'm using brand new Tyco Tru-Steel and having problems with the track alignment. Even on a simple circle I can't get all the connecting joints to be in full contact. What happens is they end up slightly opened up so when the cars roll by you get that click, click sound. Is there tuning thats needed like filing down the length of the track ends, It seems like some sections of track have a rail just a little longer than the other. Am I doing something wrong? I plan on using nails to hold the track down and want any bugs worked out first. Also I would like to use cork under the track (maybe) Any thoughts? Also when you laydown the track with the joiners all in full contact I don't end up with a full circle, It seems a 1" or 1 1/2" piece is needed to complete the circle.
I don't mean to sound stupid, I just want a track a good as I can get.
Thanks Alot

Hi Tycoboy.. First Welcome to the world of Tyco track. You can use this--i suggest you upgrade to nickel silver for less maintenance and headache. If you are going to use the Tru-Steel-keep it very clean. The clickety clack is normal for sectional track as is some gap in rails. Yes-you can file the end even with a file or moto type tool-but you will still have clickety-clack. If you don't want clickety-clack-use flex track--Tyco did produce flex track as i and my next neighbor purchased some from a local drug store growing up--but finding it now is impossible and i have not seen any listed on ebay. using cork roadbed or any roadbed is a good idea as it abosrbs noise. As far as your track not aligning--Check to make sure all the curves are the same radius. Tyco did make 15 radius track in tru steel. 18 sections of 18 radius should make a complete curve=perfect circle. All straight track should be 9 inches in length. Switch tracks are 9 inch straights also. So if you have 18 curves of the same radius and equal straight pcs-you should have a perfect oval. It is possible the Tyco board you are using is not printed correctly. Hope this has been of some help to your delima. Nailing down track is also good as it prevents seperation and power problems as well as keeping the straights straight and your curves curved and in one place.

Thanks. I think I had a bad package of track. The sections I thought had rails to long (4). I set them aside and opened a new pack and things are a little better. But now things are on hold because of a new idea.
I'm using Tyco tru-track because I have alot of $ in what I own and it's still NIB. I'm trying to use only tyco items for this whole layout. I'm using the TycoScene layout with two center sections. Now I think I'm going to cut another TycoScene I have for some added width and streets. Also I would like to add track around the edges with some bridges. I originaly wanted a bridge setup to cross over to the other Tycoscene I have and then on to a G.I. JOE or Transformers/ A Team layout board. But I have been unable to get anything but regular Tycoscene boards. Anyone think it's a SIN to cut one of these?
I still don't know about the track cork I have. It would be the only non Tyco item on the board. I started out wanting a complete Tycoscene and ended up with way too much stuff. I'll have a maxed detailed layout someday and will be more than happy with this setup that I can say is 100% tyco.
And if I don't start doing something with all this stuff, I hear nothing but hell when I find a new hobby/project

This is a common problem with most sectional track, the only exceptions being Kato, Bachmann and Life-Like's track with roadbed. With careful cutting and fitting, you can make it work but it will never be 100% correct. Replacing 2-3 sections with flex track may help.

[/quote] I hear on the Tyco track investment. Nothing wrong with that and kudos for a 100% Tyco layout with pure Tyco items. If you can also--keep that track out of humid moist enviorments as these elements will eventually corrode it. I hear you on the latter--L-O-L
