I do like streamlined steam locomotives ! Bachmann's model of a A4 streamliner is very reasonably priced. I picked it up at a Greenberg show new for $50. Now if it stays together that would be a good thing. If it keeps running it would be even nicer. Now all I have to do is remove spencers face and inclose the nose. Being a very protypical modeler . And one who is always fussing with this and that. I will be adding Spencer to my CNJ roster as Locomotive # 810. Maybe I'll leave in the moving eyes. Then I'll put it in service on the Alantic City Blue Comet. I'll place it in the roundhouse with my CNJ X-N&W J 4-8-4, my two CNJ C-44-8's, and CNJ's E60CP. All I need to get now is a Tangerine and blue Talgo light weight passenger set for my runs to Wilksbare Pa.

I'm just curious, what kind of mechanism is inside the face that makes the eyes move on these locomotives?

I don't have one of these models, but Thomas The Tank Engine was my favourite thing when I was little.

Maybe I'll have to buy one and have a little bit of fun.

TT:

My 2 year old son saw the photos in your new-layout thread and said "SPENCER!".

Nice CNJ markings. How's it for pulling power? I have Percy, and I have to say he's VERY light. I piled some electrical-box knockouts in the cab, but he still can't handle more than a few cars.

What did you do for couplers?

TT A4 Streamlined Pacific SPENCER CNJ # 810 is now in Passenger service. It runs just fine. For couplers I use X2F horn hooks.

That's about what they are going for locally in the Dallas, Tx. area (about $60 U.S). I had looked at the possibility of turning it back into a plausible model--most concerned with the tender which doesn't look quite right (front end). I did pick up a 'Thomas' brake van, as it's pretty much a legitimate model (just needs a shot of dull-cote to kill the gloss).

Hi Ken, I do not actually know what site you are refering to, but I likely don't visit it anyways as I just know about the Mallard through some books I've read.

Oh, and there is a bit of a story behind "1498".
It's just my favourite number, 14, and a slight change to 08, which refers to the 8 ball in billiards.

No, I don't play, but I like to watch now and again.

In my opinion, the Mallard is one of the best looking streamlined steam locomotives ever.
My favorite is the streamlined Baltimore & Ohio 4-6-2 P-7 class used for the Cincinattian service.
2nd fave is the Milwaukee Road 4-4-2 used to pull the Hiawathas.

No doubt 'Mallard' holds the official world record for steam, but many U.S. locos most likely could (and may have) broken that speed. I've read several reasons why the US doesn't seem to hold a record that was very attainable--lower track speed limits, unprotected grade crossings, public fear of unsafe fast trains, and undue loco stresses due to most speedy US locos only having two cylinders. Don't know if it's American pride or common sense, but many feel the record has been eclipsed here (for that matter, maybe someone eclipsed Mallard over there!). At the moment, my favorite steam streamliner is the LMS Coronation Scot. I like American steam more for the brawn than the pure speed. I love the beauty and grace of British locos, but when you build and articulated steam engine that can drag a 10,000 ton coal train, that's something!

Yeah, how come you can't buy an HO model of the Hiawatha steam locomotive? It's so nice!
It also seems like the kind of loco that would have been offered in HO scale many, many years ago. Is that true?

also not many people know this but the flying scotsman holds the world record for a none stop steam locomotive
o. 4472 Flying Scotsman ventured abroad a second time, this time to Australia for the Bicentenary celebrations. During this visit, it set a new record for the longest non-stop run for a steam locomotive. The previous record was set in 1948 by the sister A4 Pacifics when flooding caused the non-stop services from London to Edinburgh to be diverted over the Waverley route

Beautiful link, Ken.

The Flying Scotsman...was that the experimental train that was suspended from rails above the car, and driven by an airplane propeller?

I'm probably getting things mixed up here.

My Hornby Flying Scotsman was the first nice British model that Ken hooked me up with--I definitely like the pre-smoke lifter look, though. By the way, Ken, my $10 map purchase arrived today--a beautiful 4x3 foot cloth-backed, 1927 railroad map of Britain--it's pristine!! I'm sure it would fetch well over that there!

Here's my Coronation--Hard to see in this pic, but I installed a micro-bulb just under the smokebox front (too far back, I know) which gives the excellent perception of a headcode lamp (the one in the lower position seemed to be a good generic choice, although two lowers would be better for express trains). This is also my current favourite, until my streamlined version arrives!

Nice Mallard, Ken. Been reading about it in the NRM booklet. Interestingly, Horby has a streamliner, "Falcon", in their 'railroad' line, very reasonably priced--all I can figure is because it doesn't have the name recognition of a Mallard or such. Chris

I think many of the "Spam Cans" were rebuilt early in their lifespan, and all the plating surrounding the locomotives was removed.

Bit of a shame really, they have a unique look up front.

Also, I think this could count as being streamlined...still steam anyways. One of my favourites by far, the C&O steam turbine-electric locomotives.

The sheer size, cost and unreliability of these locomotives brought them to the scrap yard only 3 years after assembly.

The surprising thing about the Spencer is how quiet and smooth the drive operates. This is a nice engine to run. My only problum with it is the lightness of the tender. In reverse while pushing a train it has derailed at times. i will reweight the tender.

HERE'S ANOTHER ONE... UP NATURALLY...

FROM THE "FANGED ONE"..

"Though amid all the smoking horror and diabolism of a sea-fight, SHARKS will be seen longingly gazing up to the ship's decks, like hungry dogs round a table where red meat is being carved, ready to bolt down every killed man that is tossed to them . . ." by Herman Melville

** The streamline locomotive is a beautifull thing of artistic lines, smooth and flowing. A shape that offers little restance to the air flow over and around it. It has the appearance of going fast even when it is not moving. It can not be appreaciated when you are very close to it, and must be seen from a distance. Not close and not far away. Attached with its tender it becomes a complete thing of machineary and art. Its viewing perspective changes once attached to a moving set of passenger cars. First viewed from a intermediate distance, it now must be seen from afar and above. The once smooth flowing lines, now in motion and complete with its train set, flow as one. Snakeing smoothly thro straightaway and curve. Through town and countryside it moves as tho alive. In motion is seams like a snake, not slithering and slideing but glideing and flying. Like snakes they were seen in many colors, tuscan and black, yellow and silver, blue and silver, red and black, silver and black, orange and brown, and many other color combinations.

Rivarossi had a few, like the Santa Fe "Blue Goose" and NYC Hudsons, but not this UP one.

Anyway, here's one of the smallest streamlined steamers ever built, a German Class 60 2-4-2 tank engine:

This model is from Lima/Italy

I have seen then in the past. Never just a locomotive. Always as a passenger train set.
