Here's a F-unit I was given for free, and it's not hard to tell why.

I have two guesses, either Tyco/Mantua or Bachmann. I say Tyco because it carries the roadnumber 6536 like Tyco CN F-units, and Bachmann because of the way the numberboards are constructed.

Other than that, I'm lost. It says "Made In Yugoslovia" on the bottom, and I took a picture of the motor the help identify. Any ideas?

To be honest I don't really want a CN F-unit, unless it's in that beautiful green and gold. Then I'll take it.

I suppose I'm also partial to diesels in CP maroon and gray, and Royal Hudsons.

You gotta love the Royal Hudson.

This one had me stumped about a year ago when I got a stubby chassis with the earlier 5 pole version of that motor in a lot of parts I bought. It had Yugoslavia and ATT on the bottom, so I knew it was made by Mehano for someone. I had forgotten all about American Train & Track.

http://www.ho-scaletrains.net/atttrainsresource/id106.html

It has the same drive as the old AHM C-Liner and BL-2, Though it looks like they retooled the sideframes to look like EMD trucks by the time they made yours, instead of the original crude AHM Fairbanks Morse trucks. It also looks like someone has fitted an F7 shell on the chassis.

I agree. It looks like some one dropped a shell onto the AHM C-Liner chassis. Does the shell have any markings on the inside roof?

No, no markings other than the country it was manufactured in.

The shell is certainly a Tyco style one, it has the same steam generator details on the top rear of the shell.

However, it also has square nothces cut just above the fuel tank that fit perfectly with the frame, so I'm pretty sure both the shell and the frame came together from the factory.

Also, the number on the side is 6536 like Tyco units, but the numberboards read 7009 if that helps at all.

Fact: It's an F9 shell, as spotted by the set of louvers between the cab and the first porthole window.

Fact: It's NOT a Bachmann F9, as the Bachmann shell has the notched fuel tank side skirting. The one Matt has appears to have a full skirt. Also, the Bachmann numberboards are separate castings that do not fit perfectly flush and are removable, whereas Matt's looks a little more robust in construction.

Fact: Mehano DID/DOES have F9 tooling that presumably has origins in the old ATT shell, but with a corrected nose and profile.

My vote is 100% Mehano. For whom is another matter.

Question: What was the "deal" with Tyco for the Canadian market? Was stuff available there that was not widely so in the US? This leads to...

Conjecture: Toward the end of the line, Tyco started subbing the same Mehano F9 into their Rock Island train sets. While I *doubt* the following, could it be possible they had some canadian-market engines run as well?

The matching road number may not mean anything. This has happened elsewhere in the hobby. For example, Lima made a Southern Railway 50' container flatcar that has the EXACT same markings as Tyco's.

Although to further muddle the mystery, Mehano STILL makes a BN boxcat with the same "10024" road# that Tyco made infamous... but Mehano made Tyco's own BN boxcars on different tooling in the late 80's.

Ow. My head hurts.

Okay, I took a couple more pics to help out.

Here's a comparison in roof details between my Tyco Santa Fe F-9 (top), and the unknown (bottom).

As you can see, the details on the rear of the roof are the same, but the vent fans are slightly different. The big fan is smaller on the F-9, and the smaller fan hubs are flatter on the F-9 as well.

These are the square notches I was talking about:

The shell looks like this Model Power F-9. The pilot on this one was distroyed and a Tyco pilot was grafted on.
The drive on this one is the dual drive like the AHM GP-18 drive.

Ray, so I assume Model Power acquired the old ATT F-T tooling, put smaller EMD trucks on it and an F9 shell, and then at some point powered both trucks. Since they had to retool the chassis for the drive, I wonder why they didn't correct the fuel tank and use the slots in the shell instead of the original square lugs.
