Hey Guys:
For September I'm gonna come forward from the 50's to more or less present day. My buddy George who was a prolific Layout designer, did this next one up for me in the last year of his life. It is based on my favourite RR the Hoboen Shore (HSR) which is about 1 1/2 miles long end to end and has 8 miles of track.
Theres lot's of info online about the HSR, but here's George's interpretation of the car float/ferry yard/throat.
Above is his drawing, below the actual HSR trackplan. The sweeping track arcing to the right and down in the lower dwg is to interchange with the Erie-Lakawanna.

Any comments or observations, feel free!?

Due to your posts, especially one you made back in February 2007 which mentioned George Baustert (see http://www.trainplayer.com/Site2/Baustert%20Gallery.html ), I have started a layout based loosely on his dock / float bridge designs such as this one.
So far, we have a 2 ft x 8 ft shelf, high enough to get my wheel chair under while still allowing me to reach the 2 ft backdrop. I say we cause its a group project of whom ever I can seduce to enter my lair. A brother-in-law did the carpentry, assisted by son, Tom (MyDadsToys). Today, my lady (MadameQueen) assisted in pasting some Walthers background scenes up. Meanwhile Ive been working on some warehouses and such for background buildings. This 8 ft section is centered on a 12 ft wall giving me the option of extending my fledgling empire to who knows where...
Now, for the point of this discourse; 1 If I can do this, at my age and as crippled up as I am, there is no excuse for anyone to stay on their couch and not start building!
2 Since it was your posts that got me interested in building a small dock side layout I must warn you that if anything goes wrong during this project, Im going to blame you!
Seriously, I thank you for the inspiration and suggest that any one with limited space look at these dockside urban railroads. Most of Bausterts designs suggest ways of expanding in the future. If one looks at the above Hoboken Shore plan one sees it crying out to be turned into an L shaped out and back Have a little more room it could be extended into a U or around the room Lots and Lots of potential in these layouts!

Hey LoopnHook:
Well I got a wee tad misty there, you speaking of being inspired by George. He did a redraw of this just a few weeks before he died.
Cancer at the end made him pretty cranky, and a lot of people wouldn't talk to him. Especially in the model Train press who had know him as a colleague for about 50 years. We always got around that.
I have many, many of his designs and will eventually with a friend in the USAF that George was also friends with publish a book called "Trackplan Evangelist"
Anyway, I'll try to compile a group of George's linears for you to look at, including some around the wall ones.
Thanks again....
