Hello all..
My first question, of many I still have , is how to open an old mantua tyco GP38 (i think).
I havent found any way to open the motor for cleanning safely.
I will try to attach the picture.
Thanks

Hello there Ernesto... I could not help but notice you are from Columbia. It is good to see people from all over the world taking interest in trains. I am deployed right now to Egypt and Columbia is one of the other countries here with us. Do you know anyone in the Columbian Army? If so do you know of any deployed ones that collect trains. As far at I know correct me if I am wrong but all the soldiers I talked to here said this is the ony deployment that Columbia goes on.
By the way this is a GP-20, my favorite Tyco engine.
To open her up, first take a screw driver and remove the weights. Then take a flat tip screw driver and pry in between the truck frame and the shell till you have enough space to pull out the trucks. Be careful not to crack the shell or break the coupler off, once the truck is free from the frame turn it so the coupler slides threw the slot.
As for cleaning them, I really do not know the best way but... I have always used rubbing alcohol and a paper towel(not alway the best because of lint). Also I usually take a exacto knife and carefully clean out the slots on the commutator. Also for the wheels and brushes I use alcohol and a paper towel. Then when it is clean I would apply a small amount of oil to the gears(1-2 drops).

Hello Pierce.... It's not very common to find train fans here in Colombia as there are in the USA. I have my trains since I was 5 when my dad went to the united states and bought a Tyco Midnight Special train set that I still have. That was just until last december when I found very good deals in ebay and bought some used trains and restore them but this GP20 (thanks for the correction) was in terrible shape. I cleaned and now it look beatiful regardless the wheel cover.
I did exactly what you told me and now the motor is running like new... better than my other PM and some life like motors I have. Thank you very much.
I think the only place, different than the forest fighting the gerrilla, is where the colombian army is taken. The Sinai. But in the last month I saw in the news the general of the army telling that they are going to send some troops to help the Spain army in Irak because in Colombia we are highly trained to find land mines.
Nice to be in contact!!!
