Hello

Have been told that IHC Hobby's next TYCO mold re-issue is likely to be the RF-16 Shark Nose A-unit. The new IHC HO-scale Sharks will feature all wheel drive and can motor. Truck side frames will likley appear similar, if not the same as the ones found on the recent issue of Alco Century 415s by IHC. No date for availability is announced, but likely sometime in the next year to 18-months.

IHC's most recent TYCO re-issue is the EMD SD-24. The new IHC SD-24 models feature all wheel drive and can motors and are found on IHC's website (www.ihc-hobby.com) selling for $34.98-Buy 1; Get 1 Half Price.

TYCO's E-7A diesel is on IHC's short list for release in the future, possibly after the Shark Nose release. I was told the old TYCO Century 630 is not of much interest, as IHC has its similar Century 628 model and the high-hood feature of TYCO's C630 is considered a negative factor in a re-issue of the model. IHC also confirmed that the company does have the Century 430 and GP-20 molds from TYCO among its collection. Additionally IHC does possess TYCO's shorty GG1 molds, but the company has no interest in doing anything with that model. IHC's correct length GG1 comes from the former Pemco tool and die work.

Tony:
Re: the shark. Do you have any information on the disposition of the old Mantua/Tyco B-generator unit sharks, not seen since the first generation die-cast sharks? Specifically, I'm curious whether anyone has the patterns and jigs for manufacture. Ditto for the old A-unit RF's: the original Mantua and Tyco Little Trains sharks with the open front coupler pockets making lash-ups possible.
thanks,

Hello

My IHC contact has an old metal Mantua Shark A-unit that was used for reference and review purposes while IHC looked over the TYCO Shark molds. IHC was surprised that the old Mantua metal Shark had open front pilots and that the '70s TYCO plastic example did not have talgo open front pilots. It is a bit odd that TYCO's F-9A and Shark Nose both feature non-talgo front trucks/pilots.

I asked about the Shark B-unit, hoping perhaps IHC might do one or that a mold might exist for one that TYCO never did in plastic. IHC apparently only has molds for TYCO items done in plastic. He was not aware that any work was ever done to produce a plastic Shark B-unit and asked me if TYCO ever listed or possibly did one in plastic. I know of no plastic Shark B-units and no mention or reference to one by TYCO in the 1970s and later.

Just a guess, but perhaps Model Power might be in possession of the old Mantua metal Shark pieces. I have not made any attempt at contacting Model Power with respect to their Mantua items. I would guess that Model Power might have the most recent versions of Mantua's GP-20 and F-7A and B shells, along with the steam engine and freight car issues they have recently done. Maybe they might have the Shark Nose too. Though Model Power has offered their own RF-16 A- and B-units since the early 1970s, so they might have the Mantua's but have no interest in them. The Model Power Sharks are old Roco-Austria tool and die work. BTW, if you review the clearance items on the www.modelpower.com website you'll find dummy examples of the Sharks and FA models being given away for like $2 each. I bought an assorted case of them some months back and was amazed. Spend like $20 and got a dozen Sharks and FA's and FB's.

It will be neat to see the Shark model return and IHC is always good from some interesting "what if" roadnames. Look at all the roadnames done for the SD-24; C415; and C628 runs from recent years.

Tony:
Sharks redux: Thanks for the inside dope on IHC's reissue issues, particularly their surprise at the original cast Mantua/Tyco RF.
Sadly, I strongly suspect the original A unit toolings are long-ago victim to Tyco's 1950's "improvements" to the model. The front coupler pocket went the way of the old open-stirrup steps when Tyler Co. engineers decided to rear-mount the power truck; adding, also, that pair of rather cheesy "cooling ports" that characterize the late die-cast RF's.
Still hope for the B-unit though. Thanks for supplying the Model Power angle and the info on the dummy blow-out. If only I could get around my bias for vintage and reluctance to further enhance the economy of mainland China.
Terrific forum!

When I saw the title of this thread, I thought we had a new flu epidemic to worry about.
