Anybody ever seen a ICG C630 twin set? I have only ever seen this item one time back in 1992 and at that time it was several years old. A group of friends and I would swap locomotives for a few weeks at a time and one buddy had this ICG set. It came in a box like the Twin diesle. When I saw both of those engines in that one long box I was like WOW!! I have got to borrow those. Im thinking they were both powered because I had to borrow my sisters rubberbands from her braces to use as traction tires because the ones that were on there had came off! They were painted in the most recent ICG paint tyco had too! After 7 years of eBay I am yet to ever see anything like this , that was the first and last time I ever saw this set!

I have a Chessie System Super630 that appears to be a non-powered example, which seems a bit odd. Perhaps it was from a twin set?
Certainly have seen boxed twin F-9s and Sharks, but can't say I've seen boxed twin Super630s. Interesting.

Wow! Can you imagine the box for that thing? It must have been over two feet long! [}:)] I can't imagine too many retailers would have been keen about giving up that much real-estate - that might be why these sets are so unknown?
Tony C - how are the unpowered units made? I'm imagining two PT pickup trucks, perhaps with a headlight spliced in? Are you sure it's not a home-made "dummy"?

Tony L.,
I will dig out my so-called dummy Super630 and review it. It was complete with box, but I can't recall that the box flap gave any info...just blank...which would suggest it was from a train set...yet I don't know of any train sets with a pair of Super630s. I do remember it has vampire trucks and the TYCO-MANTUA stamped weight. I'll give it a look for more details.

| Tony C - thanks. I've seen a fair amount of Shark / F9 double diesel sets on ebay... so I know there must be a legit Tyco dummy system in place... but a 630 would surely be interesting. So it shouldn't be too hard to make one of your own in any case... but I'd be amazed if they really sold them as 630 sets. Maybe you were able to order them as a promotion or something?

Yea this isnt something I dreamed up , It does exist......how many sets were made? I dont know. The set was purchased at a department store called Murphys Mart which were mainly up north in WV , MD , and PA. The box had no special markings , it came in a white and brown box just like most PT`s of that time did!
I should call the guy and ask him if he still has it ! LOL Could you imagine how weird that would be? " Yea this is so and so from your child hood! Do you still have that double PT set " LOL

Hey,
These are sometimes called TYCO's VAMPIRE TRUCKS...

I didn't understand the reference myself for a long time, but if you look at the "fangs" coming in from the outside axles to the middle axle...I believe you'll get the idea.
As they have no prototype and really don't resemble ANYTHING ever built too well...I guess there was a need to label them. It's not official, just a slang term...but most modellers instantly understand and know what you mean.

Tony mentions having a non-powered Chessie C630... I seem to recall that in the JCPenny Christmas 1978 or 1979 catalog, they offered a Tyco set headed by twin Chessie C630s, one powered and one unpowered.

I just found this on the wishbook web page someone just listed. I thought there was some discussion about dummy 630's. This sset had a dummy 430 in Chessie colors. I don't ever recall seeing it on ebay though.

Believe it or not, someone listed this set on eBay several years ago. Everything was still in its original boxes, and it even had the brown cardboard box that Sears packed the set contents into. I saved the eBay photos and descripton from the listing to my computer, but unfortunately don't have them anymore. I couldn't believe Sears offered such a large set, so you can imagine my surprise when I found the Sears catalog it was pictured in on WishbookWeb.com. What an awesome present to get!

Look at the pic of the Chessie set:
What is that boxcar immediately behind the locomotives? Looks to me like a 50'... in brown....
And the only brown 50-footer I know of, is that elusive Alaska car. So is this set the source of that bugger? OTOH, what little of the graphics you can see, doesn't look like the Alaska herald - but then I still have to ask: what else could it be?

Sharp Eyes GIC...hmmm...what is that 50' Box Car behind those Chessie 430's? Maybe the Santa Fe El Cap??
That is an excellent site and really hope it continues to expand. There is much TYCO train set info to be added and documented to our knowledge base in those catalogs...just don't have the funds to track them all down.

That picture is from a 1975 catalog. I think the Alaska appeared on the scene much later than that. But who knows? I didn't know there was a dummy Alco 430 until I saw this.

Actually, Tony C. might be right about it being Santa Fe.
It still looks brown at first glance, and even more so when you look at the Red Santa Fe crane close behind it.... but then look at the Pulpwood car between the two. I KNOW that is red... but it also looks sorta brown, to match the boxcar. Wierd.
And the Mystery Markings could indeed be the El Capitan version of the SF boxcar. I'd bet now, that's what it is.
Nice to peg the source of the dummy units in any case!
Given all that, I'm now thinking myself that the Alaska car is earlier 70's. I obtained one in a very square deal with Obtrey, and its box label looks old. Plus, all the Alaskas I've seen have open steps, which dates them at least before 76/77.

| Purchased recently on ebay a Chessie 630 "Dummy" . Thought it would be the usual stripped down powered version, but this one seems to be the genuine article. It is the Hong Kong version, with plastic handrails, but the telling factor seems to be the wheels and axles, which are all plastic, hence no light. New member and haven't quite got use to things yet.
