Haven't seen it yet, but will be stopping on the way home from work tonight...my Dad says he's seen the Athearn John Deere train sets at the local Wal-Mart in Illinois.

I do know I have heard this in year's back and even some wonderful tales of getting them a super discounts in After-Christmas Sales.

Anyway, just thought I would toss out this head's up for any interested. I will see what I find and give specifics on the sets shortly.

Hi All,

You have got to love those after Christmas sales. Lets see, in 2004 I got a Life Like set for $1.08, in 2005 I got a different Life Like set for $7.50 and in 2006 I got a Bachmann set for $5.00. They may not be top of the line stuff but they can help build up a layout in a hurry.

Dang! And here I thought I did good by scoring 3 Athearn Warbonnets, and a John Deere Set, all for under $100... (somebody beat me to the Coke set, bah).

$25 for a brand-new Athearn RTR set with SantaFe F7, 3 cars and a caboose. All the new stuff with perfect paint - the Illinois Terminal gon even had red trucks and an ACI stencil! Add a MRC powerpack, and loop of powerlock track? Yes please! [:D]

Hey Tony L,

Are those Athearn set buys all After-Christmas Sales at Wal-Mart??? If so, are we talking you gotta be standing outside the door at open on December 26th for those deals???

The set I found tonight was an Athearn John Deere with an F59, two cars, bay window caboose, track and power pack at a Kansas City-area Wal-Mart. No shelf tag for pricing info...so I took it over to a aisle scanner...$74.48.

That's the same price for last year's JD set with F7A, flat with JD model 'B' tractors, triple-dome tank, 40' grain box, and bay window hack. I'm normally not a sucker for promo-theme sets, but my in'laws are dairy farmers and my father-in-law is and has always been a JD man, so I picked it up (clearance) as a tribute to him.

As far as when you need to be there, well...

That's last year's Wally World special. Before Xmas it was $50 - still a gret price. The drive in the engine used a lager, less rifined motor, but all the frieght cars sport the newer "premium" RTR paint jobs, and the caboose and F-unit both had window glass!

And there's the damage a couple weeks after Christmas. I couldn't take the chance they'd still be there at that price, so I finally flinched. JD set was $25 too. Kept a Warbonnet and JD for myself, donated a Warbonnet to charity, and am keeping the last to gift later on.

OHHHHH, YOU'RE KILLIN' ME!!! $25!!!!

Just seeing the price tag has me excited...though the Wal-Mart I hit last night only had the F59PHI John Deere set for $74.48...though I'll be lurking around the Kansas City and St. Joseph Wal-Marts after Christmas to see what I might find!

Goingincirclez, you got a good deal on the warbonnet set.

John Deere stuff is a big deal up here in Wisconsin. Our local Fleet farm has a whole isle dedicated to it all.
