as we in uk never had wood burning locos does any one know best method of reproducing a load as i have a number of locos that need it ie roundhouse/mdc 2-6-0s ken

Try 3/16" to 1/4" dowels painted brown/grey. Cut them to scale 18-24" lengths, then split them into halves, thirds and quarters. This will reveal the lighter wood inside (the reason you paint instead of stain), they won't split evenly and they'll stack like the real cord wood.
