Does anyone who has a Varney Diesel Switcher have any doubt it's an EMD NW-2?
Any thoughts???

| I don't have one, but a couple of entries on the web call it an NW-2, and that was probably the most common loco with the stepped hood. Not sure what the box would have called it, some mfgrs. made switchers that were somewhat generic, and didn't follow exact specs. (like Athearn). http://cgi.ebay.com/varney-assorted-nw-2-diesel-parts-ho-836a_W0QQitemZ310065888469QQihZ021QQcategoryZ38278QQtcZphotoQQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Thanks, Adams. That was helpful.
I also downloaded a "Yard Limit" EMD Switcher Spotters Guide and it made it even more clear.

Hi Larry:
Already went through the pages on your seeker site. In fact last night I noticed the rear step/pilot was at an angle and I saw in the explosion that it was detachable which means I can align it!
Thanks, Gareth

How does it run, Gareth? I worked on a friend's unit years ago, and it sounded like a coffee grinder no matter what I did.

Haven`t had a chance to repower it yet. I assume the noise came from the large driveshaft gear?

Hi. Gareth. I have a few of them in boxes. It seems that in the Varney Catalogs they only refer to it as a Yard Switcher or General Motors 1000 HP. In the Greenberg's Guide to Varney Trains it is listed as a EMD NW-2. On the boxes of the ones I have, the early yellow box says 2230k Yard Diesel Locomotive. On the Red & later Blue box It states SW-7 Diesel Switcher. So I guess It could be all of the above. These Engines came with Single Drive and Dual Drives similar to the F3s. I also like how Varney States on the Red Box That it is "Engineered to Run Over 100,000 Scale Miles" [:D] Carl

Gareth,
I was just doing maintenance for him, not a repower. They run okay, but those big spur gears are noisy. The best way to quiet them would be a belt and pulleys, but you might want to leave them stock.
