Here are 2 photos of my GP9 "torpedo boat". Again it started as a lowly AHM GP18. Exterior changes: 1) replaced handrails 2) added grabs, rotory beacon, and bell on side of longhood 3) Replaced 2 large fans atop longhood with 4 smaller ones. 4) added roof top air tanks and plumbing. 5) used putty to reshape/enlarge fuel tank 6) chassie mounted couplers and filled pilots with sheet plastic. Mechanism changes identical to GTW GP18.
The road name, "New Mexico Northern" is my freelanced railroad. #990 is a backup passenger loco for when the primary passenger locos are in the shop. I will replace the poor pics with better ones over the weekend. And yes, the AHM GP18 is my favorite for rebuilding. It easily converts from a GP18 to a GP9 to a GP7. And it is very easy to remotor.

Nice job, I've rebuilt a few of the GP18s into GP9s also. I think they are a great base for kitbashing also.

Great work on all of these (GTW, etc) !! It's amazing what a little paint and a couple of detail parts can do, let alone the whole parts bin... which you obviously know how to use. Could teach us all a thing or three about making hadnrails, I'm sure.
Kudos again!

Hypoponera: Another nice 'bash. I think your fill and paint work is first rate. All you need to do is apply the zimmerit... MagnoliaAcademy

Thanks for the compliments! But the main reason for posting the photos is to get others to do the same. I would love to see other's work as well! By the way, NOTHING I have done takes much work or true skill. I romoved the original railing and used it as a templete for forming new ones. I drilled holes for the stantions where the originals were. I then bent the rod to the same shape as the original railing. You just need a pair of needlenose pliers and a tiny bit of patience!
But as I said before, I would love to see someone elses projects! Consider this a "personal challenge"!!
And no, no, NO! I refuse to apply any more zimmerit!!!!!!!!!

I'll have to get a better photo but this is one of the GP 18s I converted to a GP9.

This one has a bit more modification. I actually only used the hood sections. It has an Athearn cab, dynamic brake blisters, horns and stantions. Detail Associates cooling fans, headlights and drop steps, MU recepticles and coupler lift bars. The pilots, walkways, railings, MU hoses, grab irons, classification lights, lift rings and windows are all scratchbuilt. It rides on a P2K chassis.

Ray,
Now that is some serious detail!! I am not able to put all those small details on as my kids are the main operators. I found super small details last only until the first running! Where did the nose bell come from? I need one for my H16-66.

The nose bell is a Detail Associates bell with a scratch- built bracket. I think Details West makes something similar.

Ray,
Next time in run to Trains West I will look and see if they make one. I'd rather not scratchbuild something so delicate if at all possible.

Ray,
Excellent work on those C&O and Pennsy AHM GP-18 upgrades. Simply amazing looking!!
Now if you could help direct me on fixing up my CB&Q AHM U25C. I see that Bowser-Stewart does have in stock the various detail parts from its U25B that I'd like to use to work over my old Rivarossi U25C shell. So I feel that I can get the shell looking better...but...
I'm stuck at the drive fix. My Rivarossi U25C runs nice, but the wheels won't cut it on my Code 83 track and I don't have the ability to grind down the flanges. Does NWSL or someone make a wheelset with the right gears on the axles to do a switch???

Tony,
Have you pulled the geared axles out of the trucks yet? If so, can you pull the gear off the axle? I have never seen that type of gearing set-up before. Short of slipping the gear off the axle and then onto a better whellset, you may be S. O. L. i'm afraid. I have found a supply of very good single shaft motors for you should you feel like remotoring. I have that as my next project. Fortunately, I still use the old code 100 rail.

I took the trucks on my U25C apart last night and no dice on pulling apart the axles and rescuing the gears...all one piece.
I know Rivarossi did runs of some of these models under its own name in the 1980s...didn't they have RP25 wheels by then??? Wondered if I need to start searching for an '80s example...if one exists.

Would the Rivarossi E8s have the same diameter wheels? They may have been produced in the later years with the RP25 wheels. I think I have a couple of U25C wheelsets, I'll have to look at them and see what I can come up with as far as mounting different wheels on the axles.
