Good job AF for belatedly getting last week's edition on the books [;)]; I went to start this weeks and somehow the dates were changed, so I changed it back.

Anyway. Last interesting thing I have for now. Have heard about the Model Railroader anniversary car many times, but don't believe this has been seen or mentioned here before:

Box and car are both dated 11-65.

Sweet car, Tony, never saw that one before. I does have this one though, the demarcation point between the MR I knew and loved and the shop rag it's become...

Here is my car of the week. It´s a US-style box car from Mehano. It carries a unique lettering for Slovenian Railways SZ

Mehano made a handful (actually less than ten) of these cars, back in 2003, for a promotional train on their layout on the "International Modell Railway Exhibition" in Munich. On the last day of this exhibition I was waiving with some Euro bills and recieved two of those....

Here some closer looks at the european style lettering:

This ist completely freelance, as American rolling stock doesn´t fit into the smaller European loading gauge! Anyway, it´s rare and unique... [:D]

Hello All--Let me know if you've seen something like this--I had never seen one before purchasing this. It appears to be a basic Athearn 40' boxcar, with a somewhat unusual Wells Fargo Co. Express paint job. Also interesting, is there's no road number. I picked it up for a buck. If you notice underneath, it has been converted to a track cleaner...very handy for my garage layout.

Hey SG:

I've been buying MR copies from the 50's and 70's. Oddly haven't seen many from the 60's.

Where do you think it went bad and in what way?

This is an Athearn Gondola painted for the Smiths Falls Railway Museum. The museum is an old train station located in Smiths Falls, Ontario. It has several engines, speeders, and a number of cabooses and passenger cars. They were selling these Athearn cars a few years ago in the gift shop.

The Trains boxcar is a Tyco; although the box is unlabeled, it is dated correctly.

In the late 80s/early 90s, they trended towards product identification rather than craftsmanship in their modeling. You could see it coming in the early 80s with Malcom Furlow and his type of impressionistic modeling i.e. bridges that made no logical engineering sense...legs that didn't touch the ground, etc.

His Carbondale Central series really showed some serious hack jobs passing for premium model work. I'll never forget the false front building you could see the buildings behind it through that was also cut off at the top of the upper story windows.

Construction articles now often refer directly to specific manufacturers and products. With few exceptions, in the older articles, you would see, "...item X can be found through a variety of makers or, you could make it yourself by..." "Build a brass structure" on p.54 of the Dec. '07 MR names no less than 15 different specific products and tools in 1 1/2 pages.

Maybe I'm being petty. The appeal to me as a hobby was nurtured in those early "pioneer" daze when you used what you could to make a model that closely approximated what you wanted, to whatever degree your abilities could take you. The giants in the hobby at the time did it on a grand scale using salvaged this and thats on handlaid track with electronics the size of baseballs and presented it to you in such a way that, by golly, you can do that too and not take out a second mortgage.

Now, it's easy to plunk down some serious coin because it's all basically RTR (even the scenery is all but "just add water")and build a beautifully detailed, superbly running model of the L&N Henderson subdivision with all the personality and character of a turnip.

I'll get off my soapbox now...sigh...[:D]

Romcat - why so many questions? [:p] Click the pic and look at the paintjob - it's definitely factory as I alluded to. Makes sense they would have done this around the same time as the MR Anniversary one.

Shaygetz - nice rant, I think you missed out on this topic a while back:

http://tycoforums.com/tyco/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=2421

My second reply sums up my general disdain for MR pretty well. But I do pick up newsstand issues occasionally if a feature catches my eye.

I have this posted somewhere else...

If 1975 is 35 years, then 1965 is 25 years. Funny to see TYCO having a personalized model for a train magazine... Trains.

It's in pretty good shape for being 43 years old.

John

I don't have a one track mind. It depends on the turn-out.

With the TYCO boxcar, I should have specified.

I guess my car is pretty good looking for 33, too.

Is it a MDC/Roundhouse product or Athearn? There is a serial number on the underbody metal frame.

The ribsided 40' boxcar was made by MDC/Roundhouse.
They are one of my favorite types made by them.

Scored off ebay last week. Mint in box chrome shell tanker. These can get pricey at times for mint ones. My collection of these is around 15 or more mint in box and the rest close to mint for a total of about 20-25
