Ok guy's and gal's here's one for you all, just acquired EL passenger car set that I want to make into the late and great phoebe snow train of the early 60's...need to find if someone knows where there maybe a decal set that has the back red and white lettered phoebe snow signs, would hate to have to make this if i do not need too, unless some knows a slick way to do it like on a computer...

thanks for any help or ideas...Garret

You could check ebay...I've seen decals listed.

I've never made decals before, but I know that computer printers cant print white. If you figure out how to print decals off of computer printers (i think you can buy transparent paper) you could always print the decals and then paint white on the car underneath them. That way when you stick them on the white will show through where the lettering is.

I'm not sure how well (or if) that will work, but hopefully it will give you a place to start.

Thanks guys...have got 4 coaches, rpo, diner, baggage, two sleepers, one combine and one lounge car for this project, more than I really need but some can sit on a siding. And yes it was the best passenger train in my estimation also...like your idea on the computer, not sure how to get the white either, if you tried to paint the white then you need to have like a stensil so the white shows through, unless you could do like a reverse...white paper and red ink, with nothing where the lettering is...then the white would show through...not sure if I can do it but it is a idea...will have to play with some little ideas on just white paper and see...was also going to go to wathens to see if they had any thing...thanks for the ideas...ps will slowly put interiors in also, already have one coach, diner and lounge interior, then they will need to be lighted...project just keeps growing, but will be nice when finished...
ps...this was my wife's idea...god bless her...she is a doll but she does not have to do the work...started out with..."hey honey, did you see this about a train called the phoebe snow, I like that train, can you do one for me"...how could I not say no...besides she ok'd the expenditures for this project...great girl.....Garret

here's a great picture of the back of the snow...check out the billboard...

What about if you got some of that clear paper that is used on overhead machines in schools? If you printed the design on that the letters would probably come out clear since there is no such thing as white ink. So you'd have the red square with see-through letters. Then you put some white paint on the cars where the decals will be, and once you stick the decals on the white paint will show through the clear letters.

I can't tell by the photo if the prototype signs were meant to light up, but if you are not worried about that, the easiest solution would be to find a good quality herald on the web, size it down, print it on white paper, cut them out, and glue either right to the car end, or onto a metal plate, which looks like what's in the photo. I've done this for the "Golden Rocket" drumhead on my obs. car. Granted, your printer needs to be pretty high quality to get it to show well, but mine can be read perfectly (with a magnifying glass!).

I have a fair bit of experience designing and printing decals, so FWIW:

DaCheez is on a good track. If you have clear decal film, you can print the maroon part only, leaving the letters as negative space. The car color underneath the decal will then show through. The advantage of going this route, is a one-color process, and no need to cut the concave corners. Of course you'd need to edit the image to make the letters 100% "negative" or "transparent".

You could also print the same exact graphic onto White film. Then you won't have to pre-paint that spot on the car underneath, BUT you would need to cut the shape exactly.

Good news is you can print these with an inkjet printer just fine. Make sure to seal the printed decals first before using them.

The suggestion to not use decals at all but use stickers or glued paper isn't a bad one either. For this application anyway - it does look like there is some thickness to those placards.

In either case, you'll need to start with the best photo possible - that second one could work. Straighten the artwork with your photo-editing software, resize it for scale, then print as max quality.
