| Ken, I don't know about anyone else, but for me, it's because Kato is 1)very expensive 2) too new to be very collectible and 3) Japanese-made (nothing against Japan, just doesn't make it collectible to me)

Hi,
lots of Kato was sold under other brand names, like Atlas. I used to have a Atlas/Kato RSD4 in SP colours years ago. It was really good, but I swapped it for some old Fleischmann (which I eventually also sold...).

Hi, Ken...I agree, it tends to be expensive and there is the atlas version, I have my own personal choices and Kato is not one of them...most of mine are athearn which I used years ago when I did my first layout... can not tell you why but those are the ones that I tend to get, besides I collect what I like not what maybe I should...but who cares, it's my money...Garret

Well I'm in the process of trading a NIB Atlas-ChiComm C420 to a fella for a nicely detailed and custom painted Atlas-Kato RS3.
I can't think of a better running plastic HO scale model than these.
I guess that's me declaring myself...

| I own 4 Kato's--as everyone has said can be pricey. Another reason they may not be as popular is they haven't done any fallen flag railroads of the past which i personally think would boost their sales if reasonably priced. The 4 i own are very nice performers adn in the CSX paint--yellow / gray / blue

| i only have one a sd40 pennsylvannia green, which i got cheap its an early 90s version, but runs as sweat as a nut, price,is as far as i can see its only drawback, but i would not say atlas are cheap either, from my limited knowledge i would put them in the middle of the model price range,it was more the quality of without spending to much time and inviting a debate on rivit counting, their likeness to the real thing ken
