Hey Ken:
I have a couple of those in the box. Don't remember if the instruction sheet is there but I'll look tonight when I get home after 10pm. Email me and remind me ok?

I don't have an instruction sheet, but I've worked on several of those. Actually come to think of it, the Greenberg Guide to Lionel HO Vol 2 has copies of the sheets.
At any rate, there are three variations of the drive. The first had one powered truck, the second had both powered trucks, and the third was the Kader-krap drive.
I can tell you that some of the wiring which appears to be in yours is not OEM equipment.
Almost all Lionel-HO drives with the can-type motor, suffer from broken trucks. The plastic tabs that hold the sideframes to the gearbox snap with age and cannot be reglued. I have devised a very simple and reliable method to repair them but is does take a little bit of work.

Interesting. The trucks and frame look like a Roco design. They're very similar to their FA's and Sharks. The motor is a GE. I have a couple of them in my parts box.

I might have one that came with the Rock Island FA unit that I have in my fleet. I have the original box for this engine, and it also has the warranty paper as well.

I agree with you 110% on this one GoingInCirclez, I once had the GT GP-9 and went to clean and lube the gears in the trucks, and one of the tabs snapped and couldn't repair it or find replacement parts for it, so it went in the trash long ago. I now have a Rock Island FA-1 with the original box and I checked the drive system, and noticed a piece of the frame crumbled on one corner, but still in good shape. I'm afraid to disassemble the trucks to lubricate them remembering what had happened to the GP-9. I think Lionel used some flimsy plastic when they made these engines because I have talked to other people who have or had these engines said the same thing about htem and some said they had breakage problems with them when they were new. Contact me about your devsied plan of repairing them, even though you said they require extra work, so I will know what to do if the situation ever occurs. thanks for sharing this info.

Ken,
I checked the two Lionel-HO 1970s FA's I have and both include the following sheet, which happens to have no information regarding the Alco FA!

Hi Ken. Had the same Problem as Tony. They packed GP-9 Instructions with the FA-1 engine. Anyway, I finally found this hope this helps. By the way, I also use a small screw drilled into the plastic Frame that contacts the metal frame tab, to hold it together. Works perfectly. Carl

Now that you posted this, Tony, I remember now that the instruction sheet for the GP-9 handrail assembly came with my Rock Island Alco unit.
