I remember reading that Alco tried to get into the automobile business in the early 1900's. So aircraft engines don't surprise me a bit...

Was it possibly some kind of WWII contract, or just done on their own? I know that companies like Fairbanks-Morse, for example, made engines for submarines, etc.
