Before I go further, let me state that this post has NOTHING to do with trains or Tyco.
But it poses a great question: what else do you model?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
For much of the 90's I was addicted to NASCAR, an odd disease for a teenager in Chicago. I liked everything about it at that time (not so much anymore), but especially the graphic designs on all the cars. It was amazing to see the adaptations of logos and personal whim to fit the canvas of an automobile under various pretenses.
At the time, the Racing Bug bit me and my younger brother hard. Super Mario Kart had just been released for the Super Nintendo (and quickly became THE ruling factor in the household), and coincidentally a concession go-kart track opened up a few miles from our house, running an insane figure-8 track right by where my family did all its grocery shopping. [:0]
It was a great time to be a race fan. [:D]
Now all this was back in 1992. There was no internet. You couldn't find good artwork of corporate logos in mere seconds on a whim.
And regardless of the internet... computer graphics themselves SUCKED in 1992! Ever see "MS Paint" on Windows 3.1? Good luck drawing nice smooth circles... or printing the color "orange". Whatever you got printed on paper looked like it was made of Legos, compared to what it looked like on-screen.
Still, I didn't let that stop me from playing "what-if" and forming my own race team in 1/64 scale.
Since MSPain was maddening, and finding catalogs with the enough logos in "just the right sizes" was impossible, I drew the graphics on paper, colored them with markers, laminated the results with 30000 feet of 1/4" scotch tape, and behold:
Crude? Yes. Embarrassing? Today it is. But it was the best I could do at the time on a "no job or allowance" budget and it was pretty damn cool.
Besides, it looks a bit like those paper-&-tape Tyco Prototypes that were displayed here some time ago...
So, fast forward 15 years. For the most part, I forgot abut that hauler and the custom cars I made to go with it. Until our basement follded a few weeks ago and I was forced to dig out the ol' Nascar collection and investigate.
Well, I found the hauler of course. Then I found a newer version I'd bought a few years later with the intent to customize. Then it hit me. "Huh, I can do this a heckuva lot better now than I could back then...!"
SO last weekend I scanned in the models, used the old one as a reference and redrew it "new school" in Corel Draw:
Of course, even now I still paid homage to the Old School, and "painted" the cab with Sharpies. [;)]
Obviously none of this ever came to pass, but 15 years ago it was an inspiration to me. It's nice to completely redo one and see where my artisitc skills have progressed.
Kind of makes me want to paint my derelict real-life T-bird and go have fun somewhere...
But I'll probably just have to settle for doing another hauler for my brother's team (#38) next.
Very interesting and artistic. The original hauler you did as a youth is priceless and detailed and shows alot of creativity. The new school graphic shows obviously a great amount of skill and talent. I used to build NASCAR models and model cars as a child and adult but have lost interest due to a variety of things. I model the trains and sometimes attempt a drawing or two in MSPaint. Thanks for sharing!
Very occasionally, in an `Omage to my youth I collect some old Rubber-Band Balsa Aeroplanes. I also have plans from Cleveland models that date from the 50's!
My main hobby interest is NOT HO model railroading. That is a fun "escape" from my real modelling interest. I model 1/35 scale armour. I started with WWII German stuff in 1980 and moved to modern stuff in 2000. Here are some links to modern armour I've built. http://www.patton-mania.com/M60_Patton/M60_modeling/Mike_s_M60_Stuff/mike_s_m60_stuff.html http://www.patton-mania.com/M48_Patton/M48_modeling/Mike_s_M48_Stuff/mike_s_m48_stuff.html
My models are the ones at the top of the following 2 links. The lower, (and better!) models were made much later then mine and with better kits to work with. http://www.patton-mania.com/IDF_Pattons/IDF_Magach_7A_kits/idf_magach_7a_kits.html http://www.patton-mania.com/IDF_Pattons/IDF_Magach_7D_kits/idf_magach_7d_kits.html
My current project is a model of the M47 as used by Arnold the Govinator prior to his coming to the States. Hope to have it finished for a local model contest in July.
AF - Nice job on that Tyco Paint picture! I know what kind of effort that took; despite my dissing of MS Paint earlier, I've done a number of respectable projects over the years. It ain't easy!
G - A picked a couple of those up for Bethany not too long ago, for when she would get old enough to try them... it's probably about time.
Hypo - Nice work. I've been taking a look at militaty models recently for ideas, that's a field that has always advanced the level of hobbyists overall. But I never paid much attention until a modeler showed me his copy of FAQ, which simply has some mind-blowing weathering techniques that can be used on trains as well as AFVs.
I made a conscious decision several years ago to have only one hobby---model trains.
I do play with a Mamod steam tractor from time to time though...
