I've been rebuilding a Mantua 2-6-6-2 and have posted photos of the rebuild for anyone interested.

Ray--Nice job, I really like those locos. My wife got me one this past Christmas. Mine has a can motor and flywheel, and runs very smoothly. However, I was never a big fan of the flexible tubing driveshaft. There was an article in an old MR about a guy who put in NWSL replacement parts, including driveshaft with U-Joints. It was really nice, but lots of work.

I too am not a big fan of flexible tubing driveshafts but use them once in awhile anyway.
I'll have to locate a copy of that article.

Nice work, Ray. Steel wool shavings in an open frame motor never leads to anything good. [B)]

I tend to use silicone tubing only where the shafts remain in line with each other, like your motor mount. In applications like this where it has to flex between driver sets, it creates a small amount of pressure on the bearings.

The only exception is on an old Bachmann 4-4-0 I picked up at a recent train show. The universal socket on the tender motor was molded off-center, so I cut the pins off the universal shaft and used tubing to connect it the motor. Works much better.

That gearbox looks a lot like the old Rivarossi transmissions.
